BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -- Spanish teenager Ricky Rubio has decided to enter the NBA draft.
The 18-year-old Rubio, who was under contract with Spanish club DKV Joventut through 2011, has been rated as one of the top picks for the June 25 draft.
"I'm going into the draft because I've been told that I'll go high. That's why I've entered," Rubio said Tuesday. "No basketball player can say no to a high draft spot. That reassures you going over there, the security that your name is recognized."
Rubio, who was a member of Spain's silver medal-winning team at the Beijing Olympics last summer, can still withdraw up to 10 days before the draft at Madison Square Garden.
"My agent will speak to the teams and I'll go to any of them," said Rubio, who believes that the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards appear to be frontrunners.
Rubio wasn't worried about his $7.8 million buyout clause with Joventut affecting his position.
"That can be a drawback but I'm not worried because my agent is working it out," he said.
Rubio has averaged 9.9 points and 5.7 assists this season for Joventut. The 6-foot-2 point guard turns 19 in October, meeting the NBA's minimum age requirement.

So I guess the first two picks are set.
Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:37 pm
yeah, this draft would be like 2007'th, Oden or Durant, Griffin or Rubio, 2 man draft!
Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:44 pm
I love it for my Wizards!
Now I hope we get a top 2 lock, Rubio or Griffin, we can make it work out.heck..even trade if we get the 3rd, 4th or 5th.

^ What will you do with your multimillion blogger of a PG? You can't just easily trade him you know. Wait...
PG - Rubio
SG - Arenas
SF - Butler
PF - Jamison
C - Haywood/McGee/Blatche/some clown
Coach - Flip Saunders
Holy cow.

An intriguing lineup on paper and one that might be able to do some good things if everyone's healthy, but Arenas might not be so dominant if he has to share ballhandling duties. Still, if the Wizards were to get the second pick they'd have a tough time passing him up assuming Griffin does go first overall (or that they themselves would definitely take him if they got the first pick).

Griffin is still lock for number 1....that's a guarantee....
Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:50 pm
i have no doubts eather, if i was a gm of any of those 4 teams, and i have a 1-st pick, i'd go with griffin!

And good to hear confirmation that Rubio declared.

Add Pecherov to that.

Pecherov isn't Russian, he's Ukrainian.

What if the Clippers get the top pick?
Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:36 am
The Clippers will probably draft me at number 1.
In all seriousness, Griffin would, sadly, be the right pick for them as well. Draft Griffin, trade Randolph again. The Clips have a lot of good pieces, they're just cursed.
Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:38 am
They give Kaman to San Antonio?
Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:41 am
Possibly, but that still begs the question of whom they'll take instead of Griffin or Rubio.
Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:23 am
Trading the pick would be a possibility.
Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:36 am
Trade Kaman or Randolph to get Griffin or trade Davis and get Rubio. If the Clips land either 1 or 2.

In your face Diddy! You're from Russia and you don't know that? In your face again!

I don't know, that could still benefit them.

The 6-foot-2 point guard turns 19 in October, meeting the NBA's minimum age requirement.
I thought he was taller than that.
Anyways, it looks like anything other than first two picks would be a fail for top 3 lotto teams since Blake and Ricky seem to have great name values already.
Fri Apr 24, 2009 5:25 am
I doubt whichever team drafts Rubio will play him right away. Especially the Wizard's.
Fri Apr 24, 2009 10:33 am
I've seen him play and I don't know what all the hype is about. I remember he was a bit out of control and with high turn overs passes. I think any team is stupid for passing over Griffin and Thabeet for Rubio. I'll be suprise if he is drafted top 5.
