Was surfing on NBA's Hoopedia and found out today, March 2, is the 47th Anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points game. Found some videos on YouTube for the celebration and an article on NBA History page.
Full Story wrote:NBA's Greatest MomentsWilt Scores 100!The number matches the man. On March 2, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain set the NBA single-game scoring record by tallying 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks.
Not 98 points, not 102, but a nice, round 100 -- an imposing record set by a most imposing player.
Chamberlain was a gargantuan force in the NBA, a player of Bunyanesque stature who seemed to overshadow all around him. He was a dominant offensive force, unstoppable on his way to the basket, yet he was also a fine all-around athlete who took pride in developing the all-around skills to compete with players a half-foot shorter.
He certainly was unstoppable that night in Hershey, Pa., where the Warriors played a few of their "home" games in order to attract additional fans. With New York's starting center, Phil Jordan, sidelined by the flu, Chamberlain could not be contained by Darrall Imhoff and Cleveland Buckner. He scored 23 points in the first quarter and had 41 by halftime, then tallied 28 in the third quarter, when the fans began to chant, "Give It To Wilt! Give It To Wilt!"

IMO Kobe's 81 was a greater achievement...

It still stands as one of the most impressive feats in NBA history and I don't think it'll ever be broken. There have been other players who could probably have challenged it, there's a few in the league right now who probably could too and I'm sure there'll be great players in the future who would have the ability too. But unless there's a change in professional culture in the NBA, I don't think anyone will get the opportunity; Kobe's 81 is probably as close as anyone will get anytime soon and those were rare circumstances too.
I'm certainly not trying to take away from the accomplishment but that kind of force feeding just doesn't happen today and stars tend to get a rest when the game's easily in hand in the fourth quarter, it's rare that they get to chase records so openly. Again, that's not a knock on Wilt Chamberlain but it's difficult to imagine a coach allowing it to happen these days. And if it did, I think the record would receive as much criticism as it did praise, simply because sporting culture has changed.

Which is why, given the circumstances in that game back in '62 and comparing those to the circumstances of Kobe's 81pt game against the Raptors, Kobe's is a stronger feat in actuality.

Not necessarily. Kobe's was perhaps more "organic" but then he also had the benefit of the three point line, which Wilt Chamberlain didn't.

Which doesn't matter, because Wilt wouldn't have shot threes anyway...

Actually, the benefit of the three-point line is pretty overrated here, it's only a difference of 7 points. 74 STILL is an amazing feat.

What circumstances? Not to bring some hate into this thread or anything, but you really seem like a delusional Kobe fan. You haven't listed a single reason to back up your argument. I'm just assuming that you're talking about a weak era and such.Wilt's performance was by far a pure domination of the opposing team.. Not to bring down Kobe's accomplishment or anything as I'm a big Lakers fan myself.. but these things you just don't compare. There's no such thing as a "weak era", all that talk about weak eras are just pure blasphemy...
In other news.. on that day..

100 > 81.
I believe there weren't any footages of that game where Wilt went 100.

Supposedly he had range out to what would have been three point territory had it been part of the game during his era. However, in that respect I'm not just comparing Kobe's 81 to Wilt's 100 but all the high scoring performances pre-1979. My point is that you could argue the magnitude of accomplishments of previous decades because of certain circumstances and the sporting culture of the time but the accomplishments of today (and more recent eras such as the 80s and 90s) could be held under similar scrutiny because today's players have different advantages that must be taken into account if we're going to say "Player X had the benefit of (whatever) while Player Y didn't".

MJ could have broken 100 mark if there was need for him to do it, in today's rules or in Wilt's days. Thus, (81 = 100) < MJ formula applies to me.
Tue Mar 10, 2009 2:40 pm
I think a handful of players could have broken, equalled or seriously challenged it under the right conditions but that definitely doesn't make it any less impressive.

Wilt's season is more impressive than a single game within it.

That too.

I think what stands out during that 61-62 season he had was that he played a staggering 48.5 mins per game overtimes included. He missed only 8 mins of tick and that was due to an ejection that he was called for during a game. That feat definitely will never be approached period and that speaks of his stamina. And for his whole career he averaged 45.8 mins per game. Think about that fellas averaging 40 mins per game in a season is actually a human feat but 45.8 mins per game for your whole career... c'mon absolutely ridiculous.
Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:21 pm
That too is certainly an amazing feat, though again I don't think any player today would get the opportunity to challenge that record regardless of their stamina.

Not that shocking since he did manage to make love to 20,000 women in his lifetime.

of course, but i don't know why there are people who says that i don't know this isn't so good, jordan could do it...I don't know, why he did't do it if he could. This is pure demonstration of dominance, one man show,i'm not sure that everyone will score 100 or more again. He keeps the record in rebounds,55 i think, amazing.
Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:39 am
Well, like I said there are some other players who had (or have) the skill to challenge the record given the right opportunity and circumstances but that doesn't make the achievement any less impressive.
