While watching the Boston vs Pistons game, Perkins got a flagrant 2 for putting Maxiell in a headlock and throwing him on the floor. It wasn't the kind of headlock where you hold on for dear life but his arm was around his neck and he threw him. First Garnett plays dirty vs Euro guards, now Perkins is pushing everyone like a bulldozer.

Let's see if David Stern fines & suspends Kendrick Perkins when he overlooked Andruw Bynum's flagrant 2 foul that he pulled against Gerald Wallace led to an injury having a cracked rib & a collapsed lung. If that happens... I'll be seriously pissed.

Not condoning it but Perk took an elbow to the face from him a few times when I was watching.
Sat Jan 31, 2009 1:56 pm
True... It was too physical down in the post areas where I was seeing both Sheed & KG going at it.
Sat Jan 31, 2009 3:42 pm
It was definitely dirty, done with too much force to be an accident and given the circumstances (Flagrant 2, ejection) I'm sure a fine and suspension is sure to follow. However, I agree in regards to Bynum, his foul on Gerald Wallace was equally reckless and the league opted not to suspend him. It will certainly be a double standard though if they do suspend Perkins it will be more in line with their usual procedure than the ruling on the incident with Bynum.
KG might have cause for concern too, after Maxiell got up and shoved Perkins KG came over and got a shot in as well. Nothing was called during the game but with the way the league scrutinises the footage I wouldn't be altogether surprised if they took action against him and possibly Maxiell too, even though neither were ejected (though Maxiell was T'd up).

Maxiell is very dirty, so I'm sure he probably deserved it

Well I guess thats basketball. Remember the early 90s where those things just belonged to the game like a jumpshot (bit exaggerated

) And I think this passion (when its not like a fight between to gangsters like for example the Denver - Knicks brawl ) just shows the attitude of good teams like the Cs and the Pistons.

it wouldn't be double standard- Perkins has rightfully so earned a repuation as a physical player and a complainer. not a good combo. he should be suspended

But it's not basketball. It's not sanctioned by the rules and hasn't been tolerated since the NBA was the BAA and most of the referees were also hockey officials. Too much is made of the way things supposedly used to be, it's not as though flagrant fouls or player suspensions for on-court misconduct are something new. I don't think the Bad Boy Pistons are the standard on which NBA rules and policy should be based. With the advances in sports medicine (eg greater understanding of and concern about concussions) and the higher amounts of money being invested in players these days, there shouldn't be a place for reckless and dangerous play and that's not even getting into its relation to the "spirit of the game", as it were. Besides, contact like that would've been called a foul back then, same as today. Bill Laimbeer was called for 3.4 fouls per game on his career, is in the top twenty for career personal fouls and certainly got ejected.

I don't disagree, but I believe Bynum should have been suspended for his incident too. If you're going to suspend a player after an incident based on his reputation and not suspend someone else for doing the same thing just because they don't have the same reputation then that's a double standard.

After watching it again, I saw KG getting involved too. He defends someone that's wrong....
Sun Feb 01, 2009 1:31 pm
He's defending his teammate, that's all.
Sun Feb 01, 2009 1:32 pm
True, but he was standing up for a teammate and you can't fault him for that. However, getting the shove in wasn't a good way to play peacemaker and like I said, the way the league zeroes in on these things when they scrutinise the tape he risks action being taken against him too.

Well I see your point and it definitely should be called a flagrant foul. The rules are there to deny these things but still I think that this kind of aggressiveness earns you more respect from your opponent. It's a game of emotions and you need to be aggressive to win.
I don't want to see anybody injured and of course there are fouls which are way too hard, but still toughness belongs to the game and good players don't give anything about the pain of their opponents. Laimbeer did not, that's for sure, but Jordan didn't either I guess.

If you watch carefully, Perkins walks away immediately after he fouled Maxiell. Is that suppose to mean something?

Maybe, but I doubt Maxiell has new found respect for Perkins after what happened. There's aggressiveness and toughness and there's just playing recklessly and resorting to dirty play and cheap shots. If nothing else, that kind of aggressiveness will get you tossed from the game so it's not a smart strategy. You're right, no one was hurt (this time) but wrapping someone up around the neck and throwing them to the floor as Perkins did is still dangerous and definitely not within the rules or spirit of the game. By all means compete hard, but there shouldn't be any malice or dangerous activity.

How can he not expect a fight after he puts a headlock on Maxiell? That's one hell of an ugly foul. Almost everyone is going to react back instantly to that kind of foul. If Perks doesn't want to have a fight then he shouldn't foul like that in the first place.

agreed...that foul was both unnecessary and stupid..

andrew- i didn't think Bynum's foul was on the same scale as Perkins. Bynum didn't make a play on the ball but clearly his intent was to stop Wallace from scoring.
Perkins put the dude in the headlock and thew him on the ground- thats suspension worthy
