Story @ RealGMPhoenix guard Jason Richardson wants to be the only player to have ever won both the NBA slam dunk competition and the three point shootout, the Arizona Republic is reporting.
"Hopefully. I can be the first one to do it," Richardson said. "That shows a lot about my game, that I'm not just a dunker."
Richardson made a career-high 40.6 percent of his 3-pointers last season but bumped that to an NBA-best 48.5 clip this season.
That would be pretty cool to see, Brent Barry came close a few years back before coming up short in the final round of the shootout. It seems to becoming fashionable to dislike the All-Star Weekend events because they're "pointless" but I for one still enjoy them.
"I would definitely do it," Richardson said of the 3-point contest. "I haven't done it since high school. Jordan was the first one to do it (enter both contests). Hopefully, I won't do it too bad like he did."
That was a tough one to watch, definitely not a highlight of Michael Jordan's career.

I didn't get the chance to see Jordan's highlight of the 3-point shootout. I know one thing you beat me to it when I was posting it. The person on ATH today said it would put a dark cloud over the NBA because he just came off on a DUI charge. That's pretty much is ridiculous where if Jason can one and up Michael Jordan on this on being a a champion then that's pretty much amazing to me. Better than hearing "Ladies and gentlemen... The slam dunk contest is back."

I agree, I don't think it'll be a big deal. If anything, Richardson having a chance to do something noteworthy will draw attention away from that incident, especially if he wins.

Here's that link to MJ's Allstar 3 point contest in 1990, competing with Craig Hodges.
Enjoy!

Ah, Craig Hodges...he may have lost out to Larry Bird in those first three contests but he came to own the event in the early 90s.

I read somewhere he only agreed to participate because he didn't want to compete in the dunk contest, and Nike or the NBA wanted him in all star Saturday so he went in the 3 point contest. It was in playing for keeps I think.
Anyway, regardless of that, I'd be surprised if he actually trained or was warmed up for that. Also, he was shooting 39% that year from 3? That's not bad at all.

I remember reading that too but I can't remember where; I haven't read Playing for Keeps so it must have been recounted in another book as well.

Craig Hodges...
One of the most known unknown shooters that you can ever see in the NBA. Just like the names of...
Mark Price
BJ Armstrong
John Paxson
Vernon Maxwell
Dan Marejle
Danny Ainge
Those were my favorite known unknown shooters at the time when they were in the league.

I think about Dale Ellis if I remember right he was quite a good shooter.
Or remember Hubert Davis? Rex Chapman? Jeff Hornacek ? Man I could not watch the NBA at that times (Inet not so widespread and I was like 10 years old) but I loved to play with these guys in video games

(NBA live)

I forgot about Dale Ellis, Hubert Davis, Rex Chapman, Jeff Curry, and let's not forget Sam Perkins, John Starks, Drazen Petrovic, and Dell Curry.

I'd throw Steve Kerr out there too. Only one shootout championship but I believe he's still the career leader for three point percentage. And of course, a pretty important shot in the 1997 Finals.

On top of that dell curry? unknown? You gotta be kidding me. I dont think you can exactly say anyone on a US team or winner of the sixth man award were "unknown" shooters

Let's see. Mark Price nor Dan Marejle hardly gained any credit on being watchful shooter down there career line. If they did they've would've been in the Naismith Hall Of Fame right now regardless to the fact they're retired at their respectful teams. Marejle was that go to man on clutch situations where the ball usually go to Danny Ainge when he played for PHX, and Mark Price is a sharp shooter but not always credit as one where he was the only pure shooter on the Cleveland Cavs roster. Don't think about saying John Battle or Gerald Wilkins. Would it be better if I said Brent Price or Kelly Tripucka?

Just because you aren't in the Hall of Fame doesn't mean that you aren't noticed.
Dan Majerle was a popular player and a fan favourite in Phoenix, so I doubt he's even close to being an "unknown".

/agree with asdf...
Also yes much better. But like i said: if you were on a US team at any point: you were noticed (especially back in '94). Also Mark Price is a Cleveland fan favorite as much as Majerle is for the suns. People LOVED them. Just because you were young and learned about them at a later age doesnt make them unnoticed.
Now on topic:
How many NBA players you think drive drunk? If it was really looked into, I bet quite a few that would hurt the "image" of the NBA. Pro athletes are people and make mistakes just like everyone else. They just happen to get publicized when caught. I think it'd be awesome if J-Rich won both even though im not a huge fan of his.

Settle down you old geezers. Quit pickin' on the young'in.
Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:18 pm
Might want to check the profile on that one, guys. Clue was around for that era.
Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:33 pm
But fact is fact Andrew. Just because he doesn't consider those shooters popular during that time doesn't mean they are "unknown".
Even I know Mark Price as a known shooter during his days despite the lack of comprehensive info I have then regarding NBA basketball (the internets wasn't on computers back then).
Don't you dare question my basketball IQ damnit.

Anyway back to the topic

It'd be cool if he pulled it off (even if he does play for the Suns), but I think Jason Kapono might have other ideas

True, though I'd say they're less talked about, less known to younger fans and perhaps a bit underrated too.

I thought Kapono was going to break the record last year, I was kind of disappointed that he didn't. I'm not a fan, but it's stood as such a seemingly unbeatable mark that it would be cool to see someone best it.
