Tue May 20, 2003 7:14 am
IMO rafer alston has the best nickname...
Tue May 20, 2003 7:27 am
IMO, the nicknames like e-rob, d-miles, etc are just convenient ways to say a players first/last name.
i've always liked nicknames based on a players game, mannerisms, or look.

Baron Davis - "Too Easy"
Cuttino Mobley - "Get Buckets"
Both came from Rucker Park this summer...if "Too Easy" caught on it would be up there with the best IMO...same for "Black Jesus"...only problem is that it wasn't known by enough people...
As far as I'm concerned...nothing comes close to "The Pistol" and "Magic"...Maravich even had "Pistol" on the back of his Jazz jersey...something no other player did before or has been allowed to do since...

Didn't Elvin Hayes have Big E on his jersey at one point? I seem to remember seeing a photo of that somewhere...but I'm probably mistaken.

He did.
My Personal Favourites
George "Iceman" Gervin
Dominique "The Human Highlight Film" Wilkins
and given by Slam Magazine Acie Earl AKA couldn't score in an empty gym AKA wouldn't get the offensive rebound AKA would probably get called for an offensive foul
But the Greatest Nickname
IMO, of course Is
Jason "Ason" Kidd from a few years ago when he couldn't shoot, he had no J!
Tue May 20, 2003 7:02 pm
don't forget
"plastic man" for stacey augmon a few years ago when he was a good player
"TP" for Tony Parker & "TAW" for Tariq Abdul Wahad, "Le Roi" (means the king) for Antoine Rigaudeau
And I prefer "Dream Tim" Duncan instead of TD
we can know about the origin of some nicknames :
"plastic man" for augmon because of his great agilty and ability to distort his body while playing in college
"the mailman" for malone cause he always delivers 2 points
"the glove" for payton because of his stealing skills like a thieft
"the admiral" for d. robinson cause of his studies in the navy
"the worm" for rodman cause when he was younger he used to gesticulate like a worm while he was playing flipper
if you know some origins of nicknames (more interesting than the one I gave here

) share it here

Earl Monroe has my favorite nicknames I think..
The Pearl of course is classic.
Also on the NY City playgrounds he was known as "Black Jesus".
"Chocolate Thunder" for Darryl Dawkins is cool too.
Larry "Legend" Bird
In the same month Alaa Abdelnaby (part asian or something like that) and Robert Parish were arrested for marijuana and the Celtics players called them: Cheif and Chong.
Tony Kukoc passed so well in Europe they called him "The Waiter"

He was also called the Pink Panther... and numerous other nicknames... oh, and he still passes very well...
Everybody seems to be forgetting *The Diggler*...

I like Eric "Legend" Montross.
Dunking Dutchman was pretty good for Smits, The Admiral and The General are cool too.

He was called "Plastic Man" for the same reason Andrei Kirilenko is called "Inspector Gadget"...his freakishly long arms. Plastic Man is a comic book character with the ability to stretch his body.
Payton is called the Glove because that's how he covers people...he stays on them like a glove on a hand...
I like Eric "Legend" Montross.
It stopped being funny 2 years ago. Now it's spam.

Wed May 21, 2003 8:22 pm
I think Amare Stoudemire recently picked up the nickname "Stat"...i saw it on a wallpaper over at the phoenix suns website...i could be wrong though.
Wed May 21, 2003 9:41 pm
Shawn "the rainman" kemp
"M.J." or "Air Jordan"
"Magic" Johnson
"Spud" Webb
"Muggsy" Bogues
I like them, but these are my true favs

i really like muggsy, and i think that is the most popular name, right next to shaq, but his is more of the actual name, muggsy's sounds small and alot of pple dont know his name is tyrone, all other player MJ, AI, DT, devid robinson , denis rodman all are more knowed as their name, but muggsy is muggsy

same thing with Smush Parker and Chucky Atkins... Does anyone have any idea how chucky's nickname came about besides the fact that it was his father's?
While on the subject, what do you think a good name for Bill Walton's son, Luke Walton, would be if he got drafted? I was thinking along the lines of "Huh?" Because thats probably the first word out of his mouth while Bill Walton was potty training him... "Flush it down little, fella!!"
Thu May 22, 2003 2:19 am
I cant wait for Bill Walton to say: "And here comes the dawn of a new era. The future of the (insert team name here) franchise has just stepped on the floor."
