Deng signs $80M 6year with Bulls

Postby Alejandrov011 on Thu Jul 31, 2008 1:02 pm

CHICAGO, July 30 (AP) -- Restricted free agent forward Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls have agreed to six-year contract that could be worth as much as $80 million.

The Bulls e-mailed a news release Wednesday afternoon announcing the "contract signing of Luol Deng.'' No details on the deal were released.

General manager John Paxson did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.

The new deal was reported earlier by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and ESPN.com, which said the contract would include $71 million in guaranteed money.

I think Deng is not worth that money... $13,3M a year... He need to step up very high.

And now what will happen to Gordon? Does the Bulls have the cap space to sign him? He rejected $50M 5 year contract.

I'm glad they finally signed him.
They overpaid him but it will work out in the future.
Gordon wants the same amount of money Deng got...

I'm still hoping they'll retain Gordon. They could give him the same amount but that would push them over the luxury tax threshold which they may not be willing to do.

With all the young talent Portland has already, I don't think they need any more help. It remains to be seen how Luol Deng does this coming season after signing such a big contract.

I'm hoping either sign Gordon long term or do a sign and trade.

Bulls would be foolish to sign Ben Gordon. 6 years/80 million for a one-dimensional undersized 2 guard that won't even start?

I know. I hope Gordon smartens up and takes what he is really worth.
No team is going to give him that kind of money.

I agree as far as the money is concerned but I would still like to see the Bulls hold onto Gordon. The last thing the Bulls need to do is weaken their offense, which they'll do if they give up the only player who's been able to average 20+ ppg in a season in the last four years. It's a lot of money to give to a player who really only has one strength though, no question.

Apparently there's minimal interest in a sign-and-trade from other teams, which isn't surprising given the contract they'd have to take on. That might encourage Gordon to lower his price a bit though I could also see him possibly following Childress' lead or just taking the qualifying offer and trying his luck next year.

Meanwhile, seems like there might be some interesting scenarios with Larry Hughes possibly being traded. Brad Miller's name has also come up.
