Paul Pierce claims he is the best player in the world. Thoughts on this statement?
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Paul-Pierce-says-he-s-the-best-player-in-the-wor?urn=nba,96670
I personally dont think he is and would definitely put players such as kobe lebron wade duncan and even his own teammate Kevin Garnett ahead of him.

Gotta love the comments on the blog, people are still going on about Pierce faking an injury. Nevertheless, it's a pretty brash statement to make. I guess if you want to succeed in the NBA you need that swagger but I'd say a comment like that does actually cross the line into being conceited.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 3:09 am
I think he's sitting right on the line or maybe even over it. Comments like that will earn him negative attention. It's a good thing to have confidence in yourself, but in this case I think he has too much confidence. There will be consequences towards his statement and he might regret saying such things.
If you ask me for a better players, hell, I would put guys like Melo, Lebron, T-Mac, Iverson, Kobe, Wade, CP3, Garnett and Duncan above him.
The only reason he feels comfortable saying that is because he just won a championship. If he is the best player in the world, why didn't he accomplish that feat earlier when Garnett and Allen wasn't with him yet? If you're really that damn good, you should be able to do it alone man. The only reason he can brag his ass off right now is because of the championship ring and the mvp trophy which he could never have without the help of KG and Allen.
No offense to his fans and supporters though, those are just my lame opinions.

I'd give him best player from this year
Thu Jul 31, 2008 3:17 am
It's a wonder how much a championship ring can do. I'm confident that he would have never said something like that a few years ago.

I disagree about including Wade, Tracy, Iverson, Melo and Garnett on that list.
He sure worked his way up to a different level with his play in the Finals.
I guess he must feel pretty confident after slicing LAs defense to pieces, and eating Kobe's lunch on both sides of the court... If only he could sustain it.

spurs fans are upset? i see where that comes from. timmy can make any bad team into a contender overnight. kobe can't, pierce can't.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 6:02 am
Sorry, When exactly did Tim Duncan ever played with a "bad" team?
Thu Jul 31, 2008 6:22 am
best power forward in the history of nba can make any "bad" team look "good" team. he just made "good" team to "champions" team. his rings prove that.
pierce is good but not kobe, iverson(HoF) good. he has his ring now so he maybe saying craps, but let's face it. he was getting nowhere if kg/allen weren't by him. saying that he's the best player in nba is sorta like disrepcting them. from anyone's perspective, boston won as a team, not cuz pierce is the best player in nba or anything even close to that. i hope he credits his team more rather than saying those kinda craps.

.Well, but we can't be so sure, because Duncan never really played with a bad team before... Both Kobe and Pierce made it deep into the playoffs when they had the right pieces with them, just like Duncan did.
.AI isn't better than Pierce, in any way shape or form.
.You seem to overlook the Pierce and Toine teams, a few years ago. Pierce did have something on his resumée...
.I thoroughlly agree with that.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 6:47 am
in a way, duncan always had a bad team. w/o duncan, winning championships or coming close to that couldn't have been possible. that's why he's the best powerforward ever to play the game.
and i'm not saying pierce is bad, and for sure, he's one of the best player in the league right now, but the best over kobe, ai, kg and u agree to that? maybe better than ai depending how u look at, but c'mon!!!

This is what I stated before so, you see, I don't think he tops Timmy or Kobe, BUT, and the finals proved that, you don't win when Garnett is your main option. He's a great player, sure, but KG isn't a go-to guy, unlike Pierce.
I think you underrate severely the other San Antonio players... Give them a decent, defensive minded PF, and they're still a playoff team.

If Paul Pierce was 6 ft 0 he would be a joke. If AI was 6 ft 7 he would be King. Everybody in the world knows AI but if they hear the name Paul Pierce they think it's a retired James Bond actor. Let the guy show some more respect to his team because everybody knows how bad Boston was last year.

.That's debatable, but I see what you mean.
.

Good one
.It's not like Minnesotta and Seattle were very hot either. Pierce didn´t play a lot, remember? And he was not very engaged when he did either.
You don't win in this league without a decent, experienced team, period.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:41 am
You are right about Seattle and Minnesota and i think Pierce and Allen are in the same league but KG is better than those two and really a groundbreaking player.

He's certainlly one of a kind, but tell me: if you had to pick a player for a 2 x 2 game and your life depended on it would you really pick Garnett over Pierce?
Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:07 am
That depends on which players are the other team and also who is the other teammember.

Ok: Let's say it's a random guy as skilled as you teaming with the player you consider to be THE best. Remember, you lose, off with the head
Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:16 am
Ok, you are making it real hard. But you know what i would go with KG. The guy has been bullied when he was young and his surviving and hopefully killerinstinct will make him unstopable.

Well Pierce got
stabbed... several times ... and lived. He's no puff either.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:42 am
He says he's the best now that he's playing with Garnett and Allen.

i don't think i underrate sas players. look in the past. as soon as timmy came to the league, his impact was huge and the team became a contender and won it all in a few years later then more and more.
all his career, he was the centerpiece(which u shouldn't doubt) and it led to multiple rings. imo, only thing being underrated is the best pf ever by you.
and imo, you are giving way too much credits to pierce as if saying he's a better piece to build a team around than kg. the boston won with D and best defender in boston is kg. pierce played a role of scorer and a playmaker which the league has more than enuf. but no doubt he's one of the best at that.

Zanshadow:
Tim Duncan's impact was huge upon his arrival to the NBA because SAS had won 20 games the year before, when David Robinson was injured all year. They were a pretty good team with a healthy Robinson, so, and without taking away TD's contribution as a Rookie, they were bound to be better with or without him.
They were contenders with the Admiral.
I don't take away TD's merit and I do think he is one of the top forwards all time and arguably the best PF ever. But he would't win without a solid team around him, which he's always had, IMO. This is my point. Your point was Duncan won with a mediocre team, or that he made a "bad" team great. Can't agree with that.
I wouldn't build a team around either KG or Pierce. None of them are franchise players in my opinion. Those are far and between. Both mesh perfectly since they have complimentary skills, one being the defensive minded dreadnaught and the other the relentless slasher and go to guy that invents ways to score, when nothing is available.
They didn't win anything on their own, but you can't forget that Pierce had some success with the O'Brien's Celtics. KG went to the semis with cassel and Sprewell. PP did it with Toine Walker and all the other Kentucky Wildcats that composed the Celtics back then.
Thu Jul 31, 2008 9:46 am
lol Pierce isn't even the best player on his team.
