I copied this from SLAM magazine. Anyway, these are basically predictions of how the 2008 rookies will do this season.
And I wanted to know what everyone else thought. Well, here it is:
Rookies Most Likely To..
Average 20 points: OJ Mayo
He was a scoring beast at USC and looks like he'll be able to maintain it being Memphis' second scoring option next to Rudy Gay. The only thing I worry about though, is his shot selection. Sometimes Mayo has the tendency to made bad shot selections, which resulted in so many turnovers in his freshman season.
Honorable Mention: Michael Beasley, Eric Gordon
Average 10 rebounds: Greg Oden
Even though he went down with the injury last season, I still see Oden making the same impact that he would've made if he were to play last season. With comparisons to legendary centers like Bill Russell and David Robinson, it won't be too long until Oden emerges himself as one of the top big men in the league.
Honorable Mention: Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez
Average 10 assists: Russell Westbrook
This was a hard one, since I kept going back and fourth between Westbrook and Augustin. I decided to go with Westbrook because his pass-first mentality is much better than Augustin's, since Augustin can be like TJ Ford sometimes. Also, Westbrook has a better chance of starting than Augustin.
Honorable Mention: DJ Augustin, Derrick Rose
Unfairly get bench splinters: George Hill
The Spurs made this pick so fast. IMO, it looks like they hardly cared who they drafted. Hill will be lucky to get any decent playing time playing on a Spurs that already has Tony Parker, Roger Mason and Jacque Vaughn.
Honorable Mention: JaVale McGhee, Patrick Ewing Jr.
Lead the league in turnovers: OJ Mayo
The polite answer is that Mayo will have the ball in his hands the most. I know he's a sick scorer but like I mentioned above, he's going to yield a lot of turnovers just like he did at USC. If you look at his summer league stats, you'll see that he got 24 turnovers in the span of 5 games.
Honorable Mention: Jerryd Bayless, Russell Westbrook
Lead the league in blocks: Greg Oden
Much like I said above, Oden's one of those franchise-changing centers. His defensive game is outstanding so I won't be surprised if he actually does lead the league in blocks in his rookie year.
Honorable Mention: Robin Lopez, Marreese Speights
Be Rookie of the Year: Michael Beasley
To be honest, it's about 51% Beasley and 49% Oden for me. The other 2% that made me pick Beasley is because he is going to be probably the standout of the draft class in 10 years. He's hall-of-fame talent. Don't get me wrong, I agree Oden is too. But IMO, Beasley is more efficient and is a cold-blooded scorer. 26-12 in the NCAA can translate to 18-8 in the NBA.
Honorable Mention: Greg Oden, Derrick Rose
Hurt himself running laps: Danilo Gallinari
Being the future of the New York Knicks puts a lot of pressure on you. Especially if Knicks fans are booing your selection on draft night. But I believe Danilo will do fine in the league. His first season as a Knick though is going to be rough. Just ask David Lee and Renaldo Balkman.
Honorable Mention: Bill Walker, Nathan Jawai
Fade into obscurity: Serge Ibaka
There's a pattern of centers being drafted in the first round and just 'dissaperaing' and most of them come from Seattle/OKC. Maybe Ibaka will prove me wrong. Unless he pulls a JC Navarro/Carlos Delfino/Jorge Garbajosa and goes back to Europe.
Honorable Mention: Alexis Ajinca, Ryan Anderson
