Rookies Most Likely To..

Postby Skills on Tue Jul 29, 2008 5:05 am

I copied this from SLAM magazine. Anyway, these are basically predictions of how the 2008 rookies will do this season.
And I wanted to know what everyone else thought. Well, here it is:

Rookies Most Likely To..

Average 20 points: OJ Mayo
He was a scoring beast at USC and looks like he'll be able to maintain it being Memphis' second scoring option next to Rudy Gay. The only thing I worry about though, is his shot selection. Sometimes Mayo has the tendency to made bad shot selections, which resulted in so many turnovers in his freshman season.
Honorable Mention: Michael Beasley, Eric Gordon

Average 10 rebounds: Greg Oden
Even though he went down with the injury last season, I still see Oden making the same impact that he would've made if he were to play last season. With comparisons to legendary centers like Bill Russell and David Robinson, it won't be too long until Oden emerges himself as one of the top big men in the league.
Honorable Mention: Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez

Average 10 assists: Russell Westbrook
This was a hard one, since I kept going back and fourth between Westbrook and Augustin. I decided to go with Westbrook because his pass-first mentality is much better than Augustin's, since Augustin can be like TJ Ford sometimes. Also, Westbrook has a better chance of starting than Augustin.
Honorable Mention: DJ Augustin, Derrick Rose

Unfairly get bench splinters: George Hill
The Spurs made this pick so fast. IMO, it looks like they hardly cared who they drafted. Hill will be lucky to get any decent playing time playing on a Spurs that already has Tony Parker, Roger Mason and Jacque Vaughn.
Honorable Mention: JaVale McGhee, Patrick Ewing Jr.

Lead the league in turnovers: OJ Mayo
The polite answer is that Mayo will have the ball in his hands the most. I know he's a sick scorer but like I mentioned above, he's going to yield a lot of turnovers just like he did at USC. If you look at his summer league stats, you'll see that he got 24 turnovers in the span of 5 games.
Honorable Mention: Jerryd Bayless, Russell Westbrook

Lead the league in blocks: Greg Oden
Much like I said above, Oden's one of those franchise-changing centers. His defensive game is outstanding so I won't be surprised if he actually does lead the league in blocks in his rookie year.
Honorable Mention: Robin Lopez, Marreese Speights

Be Rookie of the Year: Michael Beasley
To be honest, it's about 51% Beasley and 49% Oden for me. The other 2% that made me pick Beasley is because he is going to be probably the standout of the draft class in 10 years. He's hall-of-fame talent. Don't get me wrong, I agree Oden is too. But IMO, Beasley is more efficient and is a cold-blooded scorer. 26-12 in the NCAA can translate to 18-8 in the NBA.
Honorable Mention: Greg Oden, Derrick Rose

Hurt himself running laps: Danilo Gallinari
Being the future of the New York Knicks puts a lot of pressure on you. Especially if Knicks fans are booing your selection on draft night. But I believe Danilo will do fine in the league. His first season as a Knick though is going to be rough. Just ask David Lee and Renaldo Balkman.
Honorable Mention: Bill Walker, Nathan Jawai

Fade into obscurity: Serge Ibaka
There's a pattern of centers being drafted in the first round and just 'dissaperaing' and most of them come from Seattle/OKC. Maybe Ibaka will prove me wrong. Unless he pulls a JC Navarro/Carlos Delfino/Jorge Garbajosa and goes back to Europe.
Honorable Mention: Alexis Ajinca, Ryan Anderson

Average 20 Points: OJ Mayo
This team has no other scorers outside of Rudy Gay. He has the easiest path to 20 points unless he messes it up

Average 10 Rebound: Greg Oden
That dude is a beast and is the best big man of this rookie class by a mile (I don't consider Beasley is big man) This stat category is his to lose

Average 10 Assist: Derrick Rose
Assist needs teammates and Westbrook got nothing outside of Durant and Felton is going to remind everyone that he is the starter.

Unfairly get bench splitters: Marreese Speights
This team already has Reggie Evans, Brand and Dalembert. There is only 1 big man spot left on the rotation and it is going to go to Jason Smith.

Lead the League in turnovers: OJ Mayo
Saw his summer league stats, and he was playing against scrubs, sadly the NBA Grizzlies are also scrubs too while the rest of the league isn't

Win Rookie of the Year: OJ Mayo
He will get the most points and a top 3 in assist and make the most difference. I also like Oden for this pick

Hurt himself running laps
Never got this category, is it because the player is unfit or is it because they suck...

Fade in obscruity: JJ Hickson

To me it translates into most likely to fold under pressure. Could be wrong though.

Average 20 points: OJ Mayo
I see Mayo as the best scorer in the draft. With his talent, and his team's lack thereof, Mayo should have no problem topping the 20 PPG mark, even if he has to do it Kevin Durant style by taking 100 shots a night. Honorable mentions go to Michael Beasley, for being such a gifted scorer himself and Jerryd Bayless, for being a scoring scorer who I believe can pick up the scoring slack in Portland by scoring.

Average 10 Rebounds: Greg Oden
By far the best rebounder in the draft, Oden should come in and post at least Al Horford-caliber numbers immediately. With his frontcourt partner LaMarcus Aldridge being a relatively weak rebounder (averaging 7 a game with starter minutes), Oden will pick up the slack there. Honorable mention goes to Brook Lopez and Roy Hibbert, IMO the 2 best Centers in the past draft.

Average 10 Assists: Derrick Rose
No chance that any rookie will average 10 assists this year, but despite sharing minutes with Craptain Kirk, I think he has as good a chance as any. Honorable mention goes to OJ Mayo and Russell Westbrook, due to the lack of rookie pass-first PG's that will start.

Unfairly Get Bench Splinters: Kosta Koufos
The Jazz have a better version of Koufos already in Okur, and I can see them looking to veteran Jarron Collins more playing backup Center minutes. Honorable mentions go to Marreese Speights and Chris Douglas-Roberts.

Lead the League In Turnovers: Derrick Rose
The Point Guard who will get the ball the most, I could see Rose leading the league in turnovers. Honorable Mention goes to OJ Mayo and Russell Westbrook.

Lead the League in Blocks: Greg Oden
He is one of the tallest rookies, and based on how he did in College, should at least lead the Rookies in blocks easily. Honorable mention goes to Roy Hibbert and Brook Lopez

Win Rookie of the Year: OJ Mayo
Admittedly a Homer pick, since Mayo is my favorite rookie. Still, I see Mayo easily leading the rookies in scoring, and putting up decent assist numbers. Honorable mentions go to Michael Beasley and Greg Oden.

Hurt Himself Running Laps: Greg Oden
I don't really get this category. I will say Oden because he seems to be quite injury prone. Honorable mention goes to Danilo Gallinari and Nathan Jawai because you said them.

Fall Into Obscurity: Alexis Ajinca
Foreign Centers who will have to play in Europe for a couple years = fail. Honorable mentions go to Serge Ibaka and Darrell Arthur.
