Knicks, Clippers in talks over Zach Randolph

The Knicks, with an eye on being in the same position by 2010, would not accept contracts that go beyond that year in return for Randolph, who averaged 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds last season.

It looks like it's just the plan for the Knicks to acquire LeBron.
If Randolph does go to the Clippers for god knows who, he'll be filling the empty void of Elton Brand.

I know, but it's very unlikely that it will happen. So the Knicks are looking for someone else on the Clippers roster.
But there's mostly shit players left, with Brand and Maggette gone.

They also have a fairly decent player in Baron Davis too. [/bilas]

The Knicks' goal is to get LeBron. Trading for a player with a 5-year contract wouldn't be the smartest way to get him.
Besides, they just signed Davis and they probably won't be too willing to give him up.

Sounds like Clippers are hitting the panic button after losing Brand. Randolph has a similar body and can drop similar numbers to Brand... But pretty much screws up everything else in the process.

Baron Davis probably has trade restrictions anyway.

It has been reported that the Knicks refused the offer.. They wouldn't really get a quality player in return, it was just for cap relief.. and according to the report, the Knicks think that Randolph would have a better season under new coach D'Antoni (which I completely disagree).. He still has 3 years remaining in his contract worth 48 million.. why wouldn't they complete that deal.. it was a rare chance for them to deal Randolph.. there are few desperate teams out there who wants Randolph's contract..

Clippers only offered 2nd round pick, so Knicks would get cap space, but they turned it down

I can't blame them for wanting to try and get a little more for Randolph. Seeing as though the prospect of landing LeBron is going to be a crapshoot, I'm sure Walsh would like to have a Plan B. And even if they were to land LeBron, I'm sure they'd want suitable assets - either talented players or first round picks - so they can surround him with a roster than can ultimately contend for a championship.

Yup.. LeBron wouldn't even play for the Knicks even if they have all the cap sapce to sign him if they don't surround him good players that can help him capture that title..

As opposed to playing for his buddy Jay-Z's Nets which are basically in the same position of not having good players (for now)?

Assuming LeBron is seriously considering to go with the Nets come free agency time.

Ray Allen and Pierce got Garnett thinking about championship during offseason last year.. Look what happened to KG, ending up as a Celtic and with a championship ring.. We'll se what happens when 2010 comes.. Maybe Melo, Wade, or Bosh would be joinng him there..

Never say never as far as LeBron playing for the Knicks or Nets, but I wouldn't deem it a foregone conclusion. Everyone talked about Tim Duncan leaving the Spurs in 2000, first the possibility of it happening during the 2000 offseason and then the possibility of it happening in three years since he didn't want to re-sign for seven years (the maximum length at the time) but it hasn't happened yet.

LeBron, Melo and Wade signing shorter contracts seems to be giving a lot of people the impression that they intend on going elsewhere when those deals are up but it gives them the opportunity to earn even more money where they are if there are changes in the CBA, as opposed to being locked in for six years at the current maximum. And who's to say they won't negotiate an extension before their contracts are due to expire?

Speaking of Dwayne Wade, this sounds absolutely insane, but by 2010 it is possible that there could be a situation where LeBron and Wade and Michael Beasley are all on the same NBA roster. If Wade takes less then the max in his next contract extension and the Heat find a suitor for Shawn Marion, the expiring contracts from those players deals plus any other players deals expiring leave the Heat in a nice spot when LeBron comes out to play.

1 Mario Chalmers
2 Dwayne Wade
3 LeBron James
4 Micheal Beasley
5 Rebounding Center

damn good.

They certainly could be, providing they don't make any large, long term investments. Still, if LeBron leaves the Cavaliers I think it would be because of the lure of playing in New York; otherwise, my guess is that he'll stay put.

There isn't as much speculation surrounding other players who will be free agents in 2010 (assuming they don't sign extensions before then).
