expansion draft

can some1 explain to me how that works, what pick will the hcarlote get?? how does it all work??

Because Charlotte is the lone expansion team this time around, it will get all the picks. Only expansion teams select players in an expansion draft.

The other 29 teams will be able to protect 8 players. This way, Charlotte cannot take the Shaqs, Kobes, KGs, Duncansand T-Macs from the other teams. Of course, teams like Portland will probably end up losing a good player or two anyway.

Expansion drafts are basically held to help out expansion teams in the first year, meaning they can pick up players with NBA experience, hopefully gaining a couple of average to good players in the process. Expansion teams in their first year generally comprise of a few decent young players who might be able to produce given the minutes, a couple of veterans who are past their prime but will have one last shot at being a go to guy, and some experienced players (4, 5 year pros) who haven't done much but didn't get much playing time on their old teams.

And at the very least, they have something that other teams might possibly want to trade for, instead of 12 CBA/NBDL callups.

Speaking of the NBDL, that might come into play with the expansion draft come 2004/2005. Anyone hear anything about that?

eerh ... Charlotte may have restrictions on salary cap during the first years no ? And I think they couldn't take the first pick during some years too ? like Toronto and Vancouver when they started in NBA ?

They'll have cap restrictions and restrictions in the regular NBA draft...but they'll be the only team picking in the expansion draft.

I think it was because the Magic got the 1st pick 2 years in a row that expansion teams can't get the #1 pick in their first 3 (?) years. Could be first 5 too.
Expansion teams tend to suck their first few seasons, so this is to decrease their increased chance at a high lottery pick.

They did that, but Rens is right as well, they did place restrictions on Vancouver and Toronto. If I remember rightly, Toronto won the 1996 Draft Lottery, but per the restrictions they actually received the 2nd pick (Philadelphia received the first pick, and selected Iverson).

A sign of the times. Orlando had just snared Shaq and Webber (dealt for Penny of course) in the space of a year, these days it seems less likely that the top pick will be the best player in the draft and an instant superstar. LeBron James will make the 2003 Draft an exception.

Still, I'd be surprised if the league gave the Hornets the top pick of the 2004 draft.

Is there a limit to how many players Charlotte can take from one team?

I haven't heard of any restrictions, but that would seem to be a fair and logical rule (especially since teams can only protect 8 players - when the Raptors and Grizzlies entered the NBA in 1995, teams could protect 9 players).

When said a team can protect 8 players is that they choose the 8 most important players or the 8 players they want to keep, the rest of the team would be available for the expansion team to choose the players they want to get.

That's why temas with a bench hate expansion drafts, because a team, for example Sac, could loose Scot Pollard or turkolglu if they protected the starters, Keon, and bobby and Jim Jackson.

sacramento won't be fool enough to keep jim jackson (if he's still there in the expansion draft) instead of hidayet turkoglu.

that's right that some teams like portland could loose a good mid level player or a prospect but the expansion draft in 1996 didn't change the level of any teams

but thats is a bit unfair?? especialy for the kings.... but also could be a good thing to get rid of players...

even with the expansion draft the new teams remains bad. without that, the team won't even reach 10 victories the first year.

and there's no rotation that have more than 8 keys players. the 4 other are only role players, even if they have good skills

Gilbert, J-Rich, Tawn, Murph, Foyle and Dunleavy will be protected for sure, that leaves me 2 more spots, Welsch and Damp (he has a huge contract as well) have 50/50 chances of being em.

About Kings I'd let Divac or Pollard go (nyone that doesn't mean they will get selected) and keep Keon, about Jackson/Turkoglu is pretty clear. Jim will keep going around the league.

I doubt they will let Divac go...he doesn't have great numbers this year(or last),his presence is more important

I think Sac will let Mateen Cleaves and Damon Jones go... let's see!

Well, Houston and Spree are definate keepers... and Kurt Thomas, Howard Eisley, Othella Harrington, Shandon Anderson and Charlie Ward are keepers too, i think... 1 more... let's say Clarence Weatherspoon.

Indi could decide not to protect Mercer, Dallas could decide not to protect Van Exel & the Wolves shouldn't protect J. Smith. Not always the teams decide to keep the best players, they also have in mind the future of the team and the contract of those players.

this is exactly the kind of rumors there were in 1996, and finally no big player was released so I don't trust at all with all of that.

The Raptors traded Ed Pickney and Tony Massenburg along with the rights to swap picks in 96 and 97 and a 2nd rounder for Sharone Wright (awful deal...) this happened on 22 februari 1996, so not exactly the expansion draft.

yeah,but the difference now is that teams are trying to save as much money as possible...so i think some "big" names with bad contracts won't be protected
