Best Point Gaurd of ALL time?

When I judge a point gaurd I normally don't judge them by how many points they make but how they play defensivly but don't get me wrong I like a point gaurd to score at least 12ppg, and at least 6-16 apg.

This is why I think John Stockton is the best of all time.

Stats dont tell the whole story. In my opinion i think Magic Johnson was the best point/forward. Does that count?

For me it was Magic's ability to make his team mates around him better which is often used why they say he was the best. Stockton was a great PG, because he actually playe d great defense too. Which some PG's these days are lacking. Eg: Steve Nash

Magic was better than Stockton, and the Big O was slighly superior to Magic, in my opinion.

Stockton stastically was better then Magic in assists all though Magic posted up more points. In my opinion Stockton was a better defender.

if you want a classic point guard go with stockton
if you want a point guard with some flavor go with magic

either way you can't go wrong although stockton was better overall... magic didn't have his defense or shooting

I would go with Kidd. Stockton was a player for a specific system, Magic was score-first PG, who wasn't a great defender. Kidd has/had size, speed/quickness/strenght, D, intagibles, passing ability/court vision and the right mentality to provide everything you need(ed)from the PG position. I know my choice is probably a bit unorthodox, but he'll be soon recognized as one of the best of all time. He took the team with Kenyon Martin, Richard Jefferson and Kittles to the finals. Twice. That's HoF worthy to me.

I agree with you but I think at Stockton's peek he was the main point gaurd, nowadays I think Jason Kidd and Steve Nash are the main men of the PG position.

I would go with Kidd.

No one can ever rate Kidd above Oscar Robertson. Never.

Kidd should still be in the 00's. His two Finals appearances were in the 00s afterall.

Chris Paul 00s-?? . He's a rookie man . I think I would still put Kidd up in the millenium PG.

VanK, not only is your choice unorthodox, but it's also wrong. The only thing Jason Kidd has on John Stockton is rebounding. Really, taking Kidd over guys like Stockton, Magic, Isiah is just an insult to the history of basketball.

Here are my top five PGs of all time:

Magic Johnson: Look at the rings, look at the stats, watch the games. The guy could do everything on the basketball court. He could play all five positions. His court-vision was like anything seen today. His ability to run a half-court offense was exceptional, along with his ability to run the fast-break.

Oscar Robertson: Averaged a fucking triple-double. I don't care what era you do it in, no one else has yet to repeat this accomplishment.

Isiah Thomas: Allen Iverson with a point guard's mentality. The guy was all heart, with world-class skill. See Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals versus the Lakers. Down 3-2, Isiah scored 25 points in the fourth quarter...on a badly-sprained ankle! That goes down as one of the greatest performances ever by a player in NBA Finals history. The guy was a threat from all over the floor, while also being an incredible passer.

John Stockton: I find Stock to be somewhat overrated. You look at his career number, and they're incredible. The guy was the most PURE point guard of all-time. But looking back on his career, there were only a few years during the early 90s, where he was the best point guard in the league. After 1994, it was Gary Payton, up until 2001, where it was Jason Kidd. Stockton's best years came during the Magic-era, but during the Magic-era, there was no debate on who the best point guard was -- Magic!

Gary Payton: The ONLY player in basketball history with over 20,000 points, 8,000 assists, and 2,000 steals. The guy is the only point guard to really dominate both ends of the floor during his prime. People forget how good this guy really was for about a decade. In my opinion, he was the best PG of the 90s. The lack of a championship ring really hurts him, though.

For me personally..its shame that most of you and over-looking jason kidd. The best overall is definitly magic...but i put kidd second..and stockton and cousy tied for a close third. Payton was too much of a scorer in my opinion. He wasn't what i consider to be an ideal point guard. His mentality was never really to pass first and shoot second.

if you ask me (which you kinda did) i would tell you that stockton is the best true pointguard to ever play basketball. he did what a point guard is supposed to do better than anyone ever, so for me thats a easy choice. now if you want to know the best player to ever play the pg spot then you gotta go with magic as he is hands down the best player to ever play that position.

Yep that's exactly it. He didn't win anything, so people tend to overlook him. Also, I think Shawn Kemp might have something to do with it. He was a bit of an attention grabber as I recall.

magic is the best....i dont think kidd would be kidd if there was no magic....i've never seen stockton play in his prime

....and no one will because we're not going to go back to the days of 95-112 FGA/G, and teams averaging 70-80 RPG

Oscar wasn't a true PG, he was a SG/PG. I also don't agree that after 94 Payton was the best PG. Those seasons could've gone both ways between them, and you could argue for Tim Bug in some of those years, and evem KJ in 96-97.

PAUL? Are you fking serious? Hes a rookie, hes been great but i dont think hes yet to prove himself to rank among guys like Magic, O or Stockton.
I would choose Kidd over Paul and im not too sure on Nash.
They say Kidd's supposed to be the Oscar Robinson of our generation but i wouldn't know. Never really followed him.
