Stats info

Tue Nov 15, 2005 8:49 am

I always wondered how the statistics people worked in the NBA.
I see this huge table, with 20 or so people sitting and everybody has their earphones and such, with their pencils and box score paper.

How does this work? Do they have a guy for every player? Or maybe half of the guys count one team, the other half the other team? Maybe there is a stats guy for assists, other for points, like that.

Who can clarify this for me?

Thanks a lot. (Y)

I don't know how they do it , but in my school , its just one big book with everyones name , and you put a check mark under every category . Points always has the most checks . They have 3-4 people doing it so we can make sure whos right . Maybe the same for NBA . that's my guess.

Its all done by computers. There are scorekeepers at the games who do it all with computers.

Exactly, all that is done by computers but I am not sure who keeps what stats. I'm sure that they got it seperated in someway that works well.

Nice question, I've never really thought about this ever.

Not sure for official box score, for outside consultants dealing with more obscure stats the coaches use, they have a lot of people reviewing DVDs and movie files and sending in notes for what they're looking for (contested shot %, +/- ratings, etc) . The NBA has every game viewable on wmv format on their server.
