Expansion Draft Simulation (Finished!)

Tue Feb 03, 2004 3:53 am

As you can read in the other topic...the Expansion Draft rules have been announced. I think it'd be fun to try and simulate the Expansion Draft. I don't want to clutter the other topic so let's do it here.

Of course...it would be a lot of work for one person to look at the rosters of all 29 teams and decide who to protect and who not to protect. But we can do it here and it might be fun.

Everyone can pick one team...take a look at it's roster (or don't if you know it well enough) and post what 8 players you're protecting and what players are left unprotected. In case of a conflict...the person to post first with a team's roster is the one we'll use.

If any team's are left untaken after two days (or maybe three)...then someone else can do a second team.

I will be the Bobcats...and I'll draft 12 guys from who's available and we can get a good idea of what kind of roster they can get. We'll also assume draft rights aren't up for grabs (example: Milos Vujanic does not have to be protected by the Suns).

Example: The New Jersey Nets

PROTECTED
C Jason Collins
PF Kenyon Martin
SF Richard Jefferson
SG Kerry Kittles
PG Jason Kidd
C Aaron Williams
SG Lucious Harris
PG Zoran Planinic

UNPROTECTED
C Alonzo Mourning
PF Rodney Rogers
PF Eddie Griffin
SF Tamar Slay
SG Brandon Armstrong
PF Brian Scalabrine

This is just an example...if someone wants to do the Nets we'll use their protection scheme.

He might be bad, chemistry wise...but not as bad as Miles basketball wise...they would NEVER in their right senses protect MILES and NOT protect Wallace. :?

Actually they are a) still trying to trade Sheed (most recent rumour has him going to GS for van Exel and Dampier) and b) is he a Freeagent anyways.

Anyway ... I take the Hornets.

Protected.

Baron Davis
PJ Brown
David West
George Lynch
Jamal Mashburn
Courtney Alexander
Darrell Armstrong

Unprotected

Stacey Augmon
Sean Rooks
Steve Smith
Robert Traylor
David Wesley
Bryce Drew

Except David Wesley all of the unprotected are FA's after the season, with Augmon and Drew maybe shipped away before the trading deadline. So the only real unprotected player is David Wesley.

fyi: players that will be free agents this offseason do not take up a spot on the protected list

so jackal- that opens up one more spot for the protected list for bulls

Ohw, sorry, didn't know that.

Who should they keep? Fizer? I don't know...

Tue Feb 03, 2004 9:51 am

Since I did this earlier...Kings:

Protect
Pedja, Divac, Webber, Christie, Bibby, Miller, Jackson and Songailia

I'd say Songailia over Wallace because he's become so valuable with front line injuries + Divac's impending break to play in Europe...

Lonny Baxter

(Edit: Brevin Knight replaced by Lonny Baxter.)

Funny thing is a while a ago there was a thread and I made a list for all the teams, but I thought no one would care so I just scraped it.

Also you guys gotta look at players contracts that are ending and restricted free agents, b/c teams can't protect unrestricted free agents, and the Bobs also can't sign them

The Bobcats will get a list of players available for the expansion draft on June 12. Each NBA team can protect eight players, above and beyond their unrestricted free agents. The two teams in the NBA Finals won't have to submit their protected list until after the Finals.

That 10-day window from the time the Bobcats see who's left unprotected, and the time they have to make their picks will be critical. That's when the Bobcats will make the decisions on whom they want to take in the expansion draft - and perhaps whom they might take and then trade.

All sorts of wheeling and dealing is possible. The Bobcats can make deals with various clubs not to draft a certain unprotected player, for example. They can make deals to draft an unprotected player and send him to another team. It's conceivable that they could even take one player and combine him with the fourth pick in the NBA draft to trade up two nights later.

"We're going to have our rankings done long before we get the unprotected list," Bickerstaff said. "So as soon as we get that list, we can start wheeling and dealing from jump street. I'd say from day one, we'll start feeling teams out and seeing what kind of leverage we're going to have, and which teams have interest in certain people.

The speculation around the league is that several teams will leave high-priced older players unprotected, hoping to clear up salary-cap space. The Bobcats' general philosophy seems to be geared to bringing in younger, unproven players
