John Wall out 12 months with ruptured Achilles

Wed Feb 06, 2019 8:31 pm

John Wall will be out at least a year after rupturing Achilles at home

John Wall isn’t having an easy time lately. The Washington Wizards guard will miss at least 12 months after having surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon, per a team release.

Wall suffered the rupture when he slipped and fell at his home, per the team. It was diagnosed during a procedure to clear out an infection in the incision from his heel surgery Jan. 8.

The procedure has not yet been scheduled and will be done in Green Bay, Wisconsin, by Dr. Robert Anderson.

Wall, 28, had left heel surgery days into the new year after consulting with a foot specialist. The surgery was a “debridement and repair of a Haglund’s deformity and a chronic Achilles tendon injury.”

The surgery kept him out an expected six-to-eight months, which would leave a return for the 2019-20 season at least a possibility.

Per the team, he developed an infection in the incision. The Wizards’ Director of Medical Services and Orthopedist Dr. Wiemi Douoguih diagnosed the rupture during the procedure to clean out the infection. It was determined it was suffered during a fall at home.

His huge contract has just kicked in as well, so it's terrible news for the Wizards. As the article notes, he's also had some knee problems over the years, but he was quite healthy from 2013-2017. This is naturally a huge setback though, and the fact that the worst of it didn't even happen on the court really has to sting.

Slipped and fell at home? Horrible luck. The Wizards are cursed.

Got to feel sorry for the Wizards fans that's horrible luck with John Wall after signing a super max contract then having a bad year followed by season ending surgery only for this to happen too plus there is news of a post surgery infection too

They really overpaid for Otto Porter, too.

They did but I think he's still moveable, I don't think he's a good fit with Washington but I think if Otto isn't gone at the deadline then he will be in the summer along with the Wizards GM Ernie he has really made some bad moves in recent years

Ernie has shit the bed so much over the years and hasn't gotten fired. It actually makes sense that John Wall getting hurt would lead to his firing, seems like being inept isn't a deal breaker there.

Hes just following bad move after bad move just like Isiah Thomas used too with the knicks, they are stuck with John Wall for the length of his contract now after the injuries no one will want to risk on him and the Wizards only trade options are to trade there best player Beal away but do you really want Ernie in charge of making another bad deal?

Really sad news. For all his faults, John Wall was always one of the league's most exciting players. Given what his strengths are as a player, it's hard to see him come back from this as a starting-caliber point guard, but I'm rooting for him.

Washington continues to be the poster child for poor management in the NBA, repeating the mistake of handing out a long-term max deal to an injury prone guard, overpaying role players, trading away unprotected first rounders for role players, handing out big contracts to scrubs, hiring bad coaches, etc. You almost feel bad for an organization like the Orlando Magic, who despite building their team the "right" way continue to finish below the Wizards every single season due to their complete inability to evaluate talent. Washington's goal is to make the playoffs at all costs, and Grunfeld's ability to dig himself in and out of holes is why he'll probably always have a job.

I don't know but this reminds me of that time Carlos Boozer broke his hand after signing a big contract with the Bulls. Unfortunate accident but pretty dumb to some extent....

I remember that, but to me at the time it sounded so strange that I feel like he made that excuse up (I think it was "tripping over a bag") to cover up something that he wasn't supposed to be doing

I remember Vladimir Radmanovic lying about not snowboarding when he broke his wrist
