it's interesting to see Mark Cuban applaud Amaechi for doing this. apparently he respects his willingness to "go against the grain"

Tim Hardaway says he hates 'gay people'
"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," he said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."
The discussion was sparked by last week's announcement that retired NBA center John Amaechi is gay. The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate.
"First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room."
If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.
"Something has to give," Hardaway said. "If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate."
Doesn't look like Tim Hardaway will be winning any GLAAD awards anytime soon.

Tim Hardaway always struck me as a hateful person, and the incident where he attacked a television monitor while playing for the Nuggets rehiterated it. (I am thinking of the right person aren't I?)
Thu Feb 15, 2007 3:22 pm
at least he's honest and doesn't sugar coat anything.
Thu Feb 15, 2007 3:25 pm
That is just crazy.
What makes it worst in my mind is the fact Hardaway is just replicating the feelings that were shown towards african americans in the past.
He is just showing the same prejudice that his very people suffered because they were 'different'. If he is to be that ignorant and backward then he doesn't deserve to have his opinion aired on radio. He deserves to keep his mouth shut and hope that people don't hate him for his stupidity and persecutory beliefs.
Thu Feb 15, 2007 4:07 pm
You know what, I'm glad Hardaway said what he said. Is it an ignorant and foolish thing to say? Sure. But you know there's other guys giving statements, holding back their true feelings to stay PC. At least he's being honest.
Thu Feb 15, 2007 5:55 pm
damn, Timmy was one of my favorite players, but those statements dropped him a lot in my book... yes, he is honest, and that's a good thing, but what he said is still fucked up.
Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:38 pm
Didn't know Hardaway was such a prick. I mean, he's entitled to his own position on that topic, but what kind of homophobic crap is that? It's like he's talking about a guy with a serious disease or something...
Thu Feb 15, 2007 10:09 pm
Damn, I used to like that guy.
A lot of people in here has been saying that Amaechis announcement isn't a big deal, but this really illustrates the problem.
Think about how people would have reacted if a white player said something simular about playing with coloured teammates or players with different religions or political beliefs.

I'm a gay hater.
Shoot me.

Hey man, I wish more folks were honest about their true feelings instead of being so damn phony. If you're a hater, let your ignorance shine for all to see & hear. I'd rather deal with a wolf than a fox. At least I know the wolf is out to get me.
WTF is Tim Hardaway so worried about? Is he afraid of getting hit up Ned-Beatty-style in the shower? Nothing wrong with being gay - leave them alone already, damn.

Timmy did play 1 season on Denver, but I don't recall the incident. I thought it was Nick Van Exel with Denver who did something like that.

A backwards opinion? He's entitled to it as every pink shit wearing, gay loving straight man is entitled to their opinions also. He never said he'd beat down a gay teamate, he said he doesnt like it.
I'm going to buy a tim hardaway jersey on ebay right now. I've never been more proud to own nba live 98 in my life.

I just listened to the sound clip of the interview and he didn't sound that bad at first. he just mentioned that he doesn't like it and would rather not be around it... the worst he said was "It's not right". but then the host cracks it open and says "do you know what you're saying?" and calls him homophobic.

Nick had an incident with a moniter too I believe, but Timmy did too while in Denver.
I'm ashamed I went to this asshole's basketball camp, and I'm ashamed he every played for my favorite team.
Fri Feb 16, 2007 11:12 am
Yeah when the host called hom "homophobic" and when he said it was "biggitry" that just got him timmy more mad. The host provoked/instagated the entire thing. If the host just stopped nothing more would have ben thought of it.

You're ashamed of him? So you're judging him becuase he judged others? Isnt that a tad hypercritical?

There is a difference between judging one person based on their hateful and ignorant comments and judging an entire group of people.
I know you don't actually think that there's no difference.
Fri Feb 16, 2007 6:00 pm
Judging someone on their actions is the same regardless. It's not exactly illegal to be homophobic or to hate gays, and it is a contradiction to judge Tim Hardaway for his believes and views.
People have to start thinking outside the media circle they are in and begin to think for themselves. Feeling ashamed simply becuase Hardaway has a different opinion to you is so over the top... what difference does it make?
Fri Feb 16, 2007 11:26 pm
i cant believe people are proud of him for being a hate filled person. john rocker comes out and says how he does not like to be around certain people(non white) and suddenly he is the devil. tim says something just as hatefilled and he gets people defending him saying atleast he is honest? makes no damn sense to me.

If you can't judge people on their actions what the hell are you supposed to judge them on?
I know you're playing devil's advocate here, but come on. Its one thing to hate a group of people because of their sexual orientation, and its another to hate someone because of their ignorant comments that are bigoted and exclusive.
