There's no real dinosaur significance in Ontario, I think 'Raptors' is just what the fans voted for.

Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:51 am

^Yep, Jurassic Park was a pretty popular movie at the time, so people decided to base the franchise off of that.

yea thats it
i found a page on raptors.com that has a long history about the raptors including when they had to pick a name..

Thu Aug 24, 2006 4:12 am

I think a lot of teams are going to start using their other logos on the court!!

Remember when Raptors had claws all over the court, the court looked too busy

There used to be two. Now theres one.

Thu Aug 24, 2006 6:26 am

Man, I would rather have the current Raptors logo over the claw any day. It may not look better on a TV screen, but when I went to my first Raptors game, I really liked the big dinosaur in the middle, and the name "Raptors" fits it more than compared to a claw. BTW, our mascot it awsome.

EDIT: According to Chucks blog, he said something like the new logo will be the Claw... THE CLAW SUCKS FOR A LOGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Thu Aug 24, 2006 5:29 pm

It doesn't make a big difference, it's not like the raptor was featured on their jerseys.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 7:15 am

Image.

Check out our new jersey.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 8:38 am

Yeah, we saw that screenshot a while ago. It looks very nice, especially the red, but I don't like the fact that we are completely ditching the pruple and over-using the red.

Also, I finally got into RealGM, yesssssss.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 8:40 am

^^ We represent Canada, so that's why we are overusing the Red!!

Fri Aug 25, 2006 8:43 am

I have no problem phasing out the purple. After all, Canada's flag works well with just red and white.

Thank god the 'Barney' references are dying out.

MLSE owes it to Toronto's fans, Al Strachan says

By AL STRACHAN, Toronto Sun

The Toronto Maple Leafs never tire of telling us about the reverence with which they regard their fans.

They insist that their priority is to win a championship “for our fans” and they take pride — as they should — in the work that their players do for the community.

As Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum said last year, “We are the No. 1 franchise in the NHL. As far as I’m concerned, we will always continue to be the No. 1 franchise in the NHL.”

Your say: Does Toronto have the NHL's best fans?

If that is the case, it is the fans who deserve the credit. Without the fans, the Leafs would be nothing more than the Florida Panthers, a team with a nattily attired coach playing in a mostly empty building.

So isn’t it about time the Leafs did something to reward those fans? And wouldn’t that be doubly true if MLSE were to make a profit in the process?

The answer is simple. Dump that money-losing aggregation known as the Toronto Raptors.

If I ever happened to come across the guy in the street I'll definitely be sure to knock the utter shit out of him.

It's these hockey first people in Canada that truely piss me off. As if I didn't get enough of that from TSN and Sportsnet.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 9:54 am

Strachan is a hockey guy, he knows nothing about basketball. Does he consider that the Raptors have some of the highest fan support in the NBA? No. Although I like hockey and Strachan is a smart hockey guy, getting rid of the Raptors won't solve the Leafs woes. Something does need to be done for the Leafs, but this isn't it.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 10:06 am

Dumping the Raptors owuld be stupid since I doubt the Raptors are losing money, and since MLSE is the owner of the Toronto FC.

It's all about Home Of the Hardcore, The Score. Sportsnet is better than TSN. I don't even watch TSN causse they are so bias.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:56 pm

Yeah TheScore is the best. They cover basically all sports without being biased, and when they are a little bit biased, they mention it, ex: This is my favourite team, blah, blah, blah.

Sportscenter and TSN are just puckheads.

i haven't watched TSN or sportnet for a while now, because all they show is hockey. But i had the impression that TSN showed more "other sports" than sportsnet. I remember during the playoffs, when there were big news in the NBA they would show the NBA first. But either way i have to wait 30 min to hear the rest of the nba news. It's a huge pain. The Score is the best among the 3. The big news comes first, doesnt' matter what sports.

How the tv stations in the US? Do they ignore NHL news like canadians ignoring NBA news?

Fri Aug 25, 2006 1:23 pm

I heard they ignore hockey and show football the msot. I heard they show football as much as the Canadians show hockey.

Basketball's even an underappreciated sport where I live in the US...everyone's into baseball and football because those are "great American pastimes" but basketball is linked to street culture and ghetto crowds. Despicable, really.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 2:43 pm

TSN showed more "other sports" than sportsnet.

If by "other sports" you mean spelling bees, lumberjack competitions to see who can saw off a chunk of wood the fastest, curling and poker, then yes.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:29 pm

Aww, I remember the days before they were bought by ESPN. Soooooo much better. Sportsdesk pwns Sportscentre.

You're smoking something if you think TSN is more biased than Sportsnet. Ever read anything by Sean McCormick? The guy is very undeniably an Edmonton homer, and hates everything Leafs. Kypreos is almost the same way with a group of other teams, and again one of the Leaf haters. And you have just as many Leafs or Sens homers to balance it out. TSN has Healy (leaf homer) and McGuire (New Jersey and Ottawa homer) and that's about it. Duthie's just there to make monkey jokes, but the rest of the guys are pretty good, especially Bob McKenzie.

And the reason why basketball may seem neglected by these stations is because...THERE'S ONLY ONE TEAM!!! Do you really think that people in Vancouver or Sakatchewan or Nova Scotia give a shit about the Raptors? They're not basketball cities. Most of them aren't allied to any sport, because there aren't enough professional canadian teams. And as much as stations like The Score do to promote basketball (the And1 shows, pretty much all of the Cabbie segments, and now broadcasting Raptor games), the demand still isn't there. There's still more demand for baseball and CFL coverage than basketball.

But don't let Al Strachan get you down. He's a well know idiot. I can still remember the argument he had with Brian Burke, because Strachan was telling Burke how much Burke was asking for in his new contract. It's well known that he's pissed off too many hockey people because of the shit that he makes up, and thus has been shut out by most hockey sources, and thus was replaced on Hockey Night in Canada by the much smarter Pierre LeBrun.

MLSE would never dump the Raptors, simply because they do make money. And becuase of who controls it (the Ontario Teacher's Pension fund), money is the most important thing. If there wasn't a cap, the Raps would probably be one of the top spenders in the league, much like the Leafs were before the cap. So Strachan's argument makes no sense, becuase they can only spend up to the cap, which they have done both times. It's not like the Raptors are keeping them from signing big free agents. And the saddest thing is, I think for the first time ever, the Raptors are paying more in player salaries than the Leafs.

Fri Aug 25, 2006 11:47 pm

thescore is the best cause they got cabbie XD

thats really stupid, they would never consider the idea of dumping the raptors. especially since you just got colangelo in. who is this stupid guy to say the raptors are a money-losing aggregation?
