I'd prefer the judges as well. Not that they're infallible but I just prefer the traditional approach and it seems silly to discard them in the final round.

You guys are insane if you think the judges are objectively judging the dunks. They're barely paying attention and half the time looking at the first person to vote to match their score +/- 1. (Seriously, watch them. I forget the judge but a year or so ago every single shot of the judges had him glancing over at the other scores and then picking his own.) The fact that they're scoring on a 8-10 scale like they're game reviewers makes it just as stupid as fan voting.

I'm against the fan voting because it's two different systems and logistics reasons. If it was all fan voting or all judges it'd be fine, I don't really care who actually wins (DESMOND MASON WAS ROBBED DESPITE THROWING DOWN THE BEST DUNK EVER...best part them babbling about Jason Richardson as Mason sets up and then getting shut up by the dunk. Look at the smile on Jordan's face.) I like to see the dunks. Plus I have no idea how the fan voting is done, can I do it? Do I have to text? Is the voting done just after the dunks are complete? (Seriously, it's been a few years and I still don't know any of this.)

That said, even though I've hated Nate Robinson in the dunk contest (and as much as I do this year, he does need to defend his title, I hate when players don't especially in the three point contest), I loved his winning the vote while everyone else had declared it a repeat for Dwight and acted from that proposition from the start. (Even if Dwight put on a better dunk contest performance than the year before, when he didn't even dunk on the most famous dunk.)

Dunno why people care about the dunk contest but reject solving the playoff or All-Star issues.

From memory, last year included a text vote and an online vote at NBA.com. Of course, I've yet to be able to cast a vote on NBA.com in those situations as the server always seems to be overloaded when I try.

IMO, they should let all 4 dunkers just do 4 dunks. Give 2 awards at the end of the contest. 1 for the highest judge score (so, the 'real' winner) and a 2nd award for the "people's choice" with the fan voting.

Takes care of the saving dunks for the 2nd round issue and gives people like us the satisfaction of letting legends and coaches pick the winner rather than our overqualified peers.

Not a bad idea if they insist on featuring fan voting as part of the contest. I still favour a more traditional format though.

Shannon Brown clearly has the most vertical, but I'm a little unsure of how he'll fare in the dunk contest. I don't think he has enough swagger to throw something insane down, much less attempt one. Still, this dude can get his armpit in the rim, so I have much hope he'll pull through.

which is good for the people who watch the highlights after the contest.....but not so much for the people watching it live.

Put Birdman and Nate in the same final round and ask them do the hardest dunks they could think of... it would go for ages!

Actually, isn't there like a time limit on dunks? What's the format?

2 minutes then 2 attempts after the 2 minutes are up IIRC

The last couple of years, players have had two minutes to complete a dunk. If they fail to complete an attempt within that time limit, they're given two further replacement attempts and then that's it, they've got to live with whatever score they get for the miss.

Shaq's grand idea

I actually agree... I would like to see this happen. Like Fed organising the Hit for Haiti last weekend (cause he has 'contacts' lol)... it would be great if Shaq and the NBA could make this happen. Stage a dunk contest for superstars and donate proceedings to charity. Pity that it would not be likely to happen... but who knows? I remember Hurricane Katrina and a few players took time out of their off season to play that exhibition game (including Ty Lue )

I like the sound of it, it'd be a great way to stretch out the field to 6-8 competitors. One point is open to debate though.

Of course, Shaq sees what LeBron does in practice and we don't, so who knows.

Doesn't matter. It's all about the novelty of it and making funds to donate!

But doubt it would happen... maybe Shaq was bailing himself out of answering questions about LeBron backing out of the contest!
