a problem for high schoolers that directly go to NBA is that they are more able to have health problem. NBA is far more physical with big men so if they have problem with their back it can stop their developpement or shorten their career.
and those kind of players (tmac, kobe, KG and even Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry, Shawn Kemp or all others) waste their first years in the nba, producing insignificant stats. All those players had to wait at last 3 years to become a leader.

Something similar happened with David Robinson, who was drafted no. 1 in 87 and he decided to finish his career in the Navy before entering to play in the NBA (89' season).
Again I'm nit-picking, (but it's just out of interest I assure you

), but wasn't Robinson completing a compulsory term of service in the Navy (as a result of attending that academy) which delayed his NBA debut? Or was that his choice?

The Navy granted him permission to forego it. However, being the honorable and true American he is, he chose to serve his time.
