That's why people are sceptical. It's not uncommon for teams to string together a few wins at the beginning of the year, when everyone is shaking off rust and sorting things out, only to fall to the bottom of the standings as everyone else gets it together. The Knicks were terrible last season, and while they've made some improvements to their roster, it's not as though they pulled a Miami in 2010. I think anyone completely ruling out the possibility that they make the Playoffs is jumping the gun, but it'd be premature to call them a lock, too. I think you summed it pretty well: the last couple of seeds in the East (more so the 8th) are up for grabs with a few teams likely to be vying for those spots, and the Knicks could well be in the thick of that.
