The Summer of LeBron is starting to seem as if it could last all summer.
But the Nets, who have been cutting salary for more than two years in hopes of getting LeBron James, have waited this long. What’s another few days?
“Nothing going on,” Nets president Rod Thorn said in a text message Sunday. “Waiting for decisions.”
James won’t make his decision today as originally thought. His decision likely will come later this week, perhaps Wednesday night or Thursday. That’s the first day teams are permitted to sign free agents.
Although many Nets’ fans — and those whose teams are in the race — have been pulling out their hair waiting for James’ decision, the longer it goes could mean he’s leaning toward changing teams.
League sources said he’s deciding from among the Cavaliers, Bulls and Nets.
James will host his three-day Nike Skills Academy for the top high school players in his hometown of Akron beginning today. If he is leaving Cleveland and it became public, the camp would be ruined.
“If he was staying in Cleveland wouldn’t he do it now?” said an NBA source, confirming Wednesday might be the earliest the James’ decision is known.
It’s a legitimate question and could be the case. Maybe James doesn’t want to take away from the camp. But it could be James likes the attention and suspense he’s causing.
James met with the Nets, Knicks, Heat, Clippers, Cavaliers and Bulls. He knows what each team has to offer, what each is willing to do to get him. Many teams and fellow free agents are in a holding pattern, waiting on James — and by extension Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
The Nets aren’t scheduling meetings with other free agents or going forward with contingency plans. They’ve put everything into getting James and Bosh primarily and they’re sticking what that plan.
“We are in the game for the main guys,” Thorn said.
James, Bosh and Wade met with the Nets the first day teams could negotiate with free agents. Barring a shocking turn of events, Wade will stay in Miami or go home to play for Chicago. The Nets are going all-in for James, but Bosh could hold the cards.
Unless he goes to Houston in a sign-and-trade, the expectation is Bosh will join James or Wade wherever they are. It could be Chicago, Miami or New Jersey. Some think the Knicks still are in the picture for James, but they appear to be on the outside looking in.
The Nets would have to clear $3 million — roughly Kris Humphries’ salary — to sign two max players. But they would do it as quickly as it takes James to make it from baseline-to-basket with the ball if it means signing the two-time MVP.
All things considered, the Cavaliers seem to be the front-runners for James. They can offer him the most money — $30 million more over six years — and the comforts of home.
It’s conceivable that James could sign a three-year deal with Cleveland, give it a few more tries to win a championship at home and then sign with the Nets when they’re in Brooklyn. They will play at least the next two years at Prudential Center in Newark.
The Bulls are considered the top team James would leave for, although Nets’ sources feel differently.
Chicago has a solid nucleus, play in a major market and James would get to follow the footsteps of his idol Michael Jordan.
Some have speculated James wants to make his own legacy and not follow or be compared to anyone. That thought process could give the Nets a good chance.
For now, everyone waits.
