Re: Clippers owner under investigation for racist comments

Sterling's an eighty year old asshole. They say dumb stuff.

The league knew about his views on blacks. The players did. The media did.

Like volsey says it seems in some respects he's mainly bitching about her bringing people to the games and taking photos with people, the black adjective seems almost as if he's using it as a stand-in for shitty people like Magic.

The owners aren't going to allow a team to be taken from someone over any kind of comments. Especially private ones. They're just going to hope this blows over and that Sterling dies soon, like they have been.

Re: Clippers owner under investigation for racist comments

Mon Apr 28, 2014 2:13 pm

I say some shitty stuff in private conversations too. I say borderline homphobic, racist things but at the end of the day I judge a person on their personal character.

Though we all know Sterling has had a history, and he isn't just the very few of big time businessmen who treat a group of people badly for their gain.

I think he should be gotten rid of though. Not someone I would want to work for or be around and I can't imagine the Clipper organization not being negatively impacted as long as he is around going forward.

Better yet, would you guys like to live in a world with thought crime law?

Nobody's saying he's going to have to face the consequences of ANY law because of something he said. And no, I wouldn't want to live in a world with thought crime law. But I'd also like to live in a world where all the racist friends and acquaintances and bosses come forward and say so so that I can pick who I associate with.

It was a private conversation, and yes, privacy is important. If it had never gotten out, unless he made a public statement or another public action, this whole hoopla wouldn't have happened. But now that the cat is out of the bag, people can choose to stay with the man or not.

Would I have it rather happen without someone's privacy being invaded? Sure. I wish we lived in a perfect world and Sterling came forward and shared his beliefs, so again, people can pick who to play/work for and who not.

Re: Clippers owner under investigation for racist comments

The real issue actually is the media blowing up this story out of proportion and diverting people's attention to things that are taken out of context in entirety. Thus pointing to an extreme conclusion. People are misled and promoted to rage on this non-news. It's kinda silly.

Leftos wrote:But I'd also like to live in a world where all the racist friends and acquaintances and bosses come forward and say so so that I can pick who I associate with.

I'd hate to live in proposed world of yours where people with certain belief or mindset are forced to systematically come forward publicly so that they can be judged before everyone's eyes. I'd prefer the world with little more freedom. Btw you are allowed to pick whom you want to associate with freely even in today's world.

Sterling's an ass and old fart. Everyone that chose or had to care even slightest one bit all knew about this already. I admit though I'd like to see sanctions imposed on him and his business. Not because of this particular incident but purely on personal level out of disgust.

Wow. Really?

First of all, I never said or meant that in my "perfect world" people would be "forced to systematically come forward". I'm not expecting anyone to fill out a form stating all their beliefs. I was going for honesty and openness on things that matter, you took it to a whole other level.

Second of all, of course you're allowed to pick who to associate with. Where did I say you're not? All I'm saying is some opinions and actions help you make better informed choices on who to associate with. You can be a secretly racist bigot who undermines whole racial groups, or you can be open with it and see who sticks around with you.

If the players/staff/executives believe that these kind of beliefs are beliefs that keep them from wanting to be associated with Sterling, then I bet those who didn't know wish they knew sooner. And those that did know and didn't have the strength to take action because they didn't have the proof might feel this is the perfect opportunity to stand up and kick the owner out.

To put it in simple words: Would I want to know if my boss was a bigoted racist asshole that did bad things to people of races he didn't like? Yes. Would I rather it was forced out of him? No. Try not to quote me and make me sound like a lunatic. Thank you.

Let it go already benji.
So you were in a restaurant and Magic was there and he went around the place and signed autographs on napkins for people there but he snubbed you leaving you clutching your napkin with only food stains and tears and not the ink of acceptance you were longing for from him.
Deal with it and move on.

No, he signed mine, it's why I have black people HIV to this day.

Bottom line.

It doesn't matter if he said it or not, he already got the label of a racist. With that said money will be lost as long as he continues being the owner of the franchise. Fans will distance themselves from the franchise, sponsorships will be pulled, unhappy players not wanting to play for this guy will want to leave and team value will plummet. Sterling best action now will be to sell the team as soon as possible and at a discount.

I am more glad about awareness of few tho.

The Clippers had been that way for a long time and yet Sterling was still able to make profit from the team despite those reasons even before the Clippers started winning games.

But in the case of Sterling, everybody knew he was a bigoted racist asshole. Even Doc Rivers, CP3 and the other guys. Just because it NEVER CAME UP, it wasn't an issue. But now people just can't ignore it because it's on your face. If this tape never came out, would anything be different? Surely, it wouldn't be like one day he just went "gtfo nigger" on Magic Johnson and killed his hoe at a Clippers game. This became relevant only because the media made a deal out of it. And did anybody think that maybe GSW made a deal with TMZ to hire that bitch and set a trap? Curry was the middleman?

But, as you said, the cat is out of the bag. So, Sterling will be gone soon.

This assumes the other owners can kick one out. There's a good chance they can't except under extraordinary circumstances.

Re: Clippers owner under investigation for racist comments

Mon Apr 28, 2014 8:15 pm

Extraordinary circumstances like say, the nation's president being involved?

If he can be Trayvon Martin surely he can be Magic Johnson too, with bonus HIV.

Trayvon could have been his son, but I'm sure they all look alike to you, Mr. Sterling.

SoF nailed it. It's no shock Sterling is a racist dickhead. Everyone, including the NBA, knew this for decades. So why the outrage now? I guess the attitude is keep your racist views in the closet so the league won't get any bad publicity.

Actually, I'm more digusted by that black/mexican girlfriend who obviously has self-hate issues by dating a known racist. Must have been profitable being massa's bed wench. Handkerchief-head ho.

Think the NAACP wants to take back the award they gave Sterling a few years ago? He was about to receive another award from them before this shit came out. How far has that organization fallen?

Re: Clippers owner under investigation for racist comments

Let's reason a little bit here. Two things very different are happening...

First, you can have or assume the opinion you want it to, that's freedom with privacy and God bless both.
Second, if you let those thoughts came out public or announce them to others, you are in a very danger point.

In that case, assuming a racist or an outlaw idea (idea = a non kind of act) is acceptable, but any real act (act = out of the ideas field) got to be measured by its consequences, period.

Note that in the second situation privacy ended (by social knowledge of the way you thought) and freedom finishes (when others people freedom starts).

So we can speculate that Magic and his supporters have ties with these recordings. This whole thing was a setup from the beginning.

Several sponsors are pulling from the Clippers. KIA, State Farm, Virgin America, CarMax.

This is a hostile takeover.

That's why i am totally in favor of a complete investigation from the very first moment. And from that point on, we can position our opinion about the case.

http://time.com/79590/donald-sterling-k ... ar-racism/
Moral outrage is exhausting. And dangerous. The whole country has gotten a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome from the newest popular sport of Extreme Finger Wagging. Not to mention the neck strain from Olympic tryouts for Morally Superior Head Shaking. All over the latest in a long line of rich white celebrities to come out of the racist closet. (Was it only a couple days ago that Cliven Bundy said blacks would be better off picking cotton as slaves? And only last June Paula Deen admitted using the “N” word?)

Yes, I’m angry, too, but not just about the sins of Donald Sterling. I’ve got a list. But let’s start with Sterling. I used to work for him, back in 2000 when I coached for the Clippers for three months. He was congenial, even inviting me to his daughter’s wedding. Nothing happened or was said to indicate he suffered from IPMS (Irritable Plantation Master Syndrome). Since then, a lot has been revealed about Sterling’s business practices:

2006: U.S. Dept. of Justice sued Sterling for housing discrimination. Allegedly, he said, “Black tenants smell and attract vermin.”
2009: He reportedly paid $2.73 million in a Justice Dept. suit alleging he discriminated against blacks, Hispanics, and families with children in his rentals. (He also had to pay an additional nearly $5 million in attorneys fees and costs due to his counsel’s “sometimes outrageous conduct.”)
2009: Clippers executive (and one of the greatest NBA players in history) sued for employment discrimination based on age and race.

And now the poor guy’s girlfriend (undoubtedly ex-girlfriend now) is on tape cajoling him into revealing his racism. Man, what a winding road she led him down to get all of that out. She was like a sexy nanny playing “pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.” She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.

...

What bothers me about this whole Donald Sterling affair isn’t just his racism. I’m bothered that everyone acts as if it’s a huge surprise. Now there’s all this dramatic and very public rending of clothing about whether they should keep their expensive Clippers season tickets. Really? All this other stuff I listed above has been going on for years and this ridiculous conversation with his girlfriend is what puts you over the edge? That’s the smoking gun?

He was discriminating against black and Hispanic families for years, preventing them from getting housing. It was public record. We did nothing. Suddenly he says he doesn’t want his girlfriend posing with Magic Johnson on Instagram and we bring out the torches and rope. Shouldn’t we have all called for his resignation back then?

Shouldn’t we be equally angered by the fact that his private, intimate conversation was taped and then leaked to the media? Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way? Although the impact is similar to Mitt Romney’s comments that were secretly taped, the difference is that Romney was giving a public speech. The making and release of this tape is so sleazy that just listening to it makes me feel like an accomplice to the crime. We didn’t steal the cake but we’re all gorging ourselves on it.

Make no mistake: Donald Sterling is the villain of this story. But he’s just a handmaiden to the bigger evil. In our quest for social justice, we shouldn’t lose sight that racism is the true enemy. He’s just another jerk with more money than brains.

So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.

The big question is “What should be done next?” I hope Sterling loses his franchise. I hope whoever made this illegal tape is sent to prison. I hope the Clippers continue to be unconditionally supported by their fans. I hope the Clippers realize that the ramblings of an 80-year-old man jealous of his young girlfriend don’t define who they are as individual players or as a team. They aren’t playing for Sterling—they’re playing for themselves, for the fans, for showing the world that neither basketball, nor our American ideals, are defined by a few pathetic men or women.

Let’s use this tawdry incident to remind ourselves of the old saying: “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.” Instead of being content to punish Sterling and go back to sleep, we need to be inspired to vigilantly seek out, expose, and eliminate racism at its first signs.

^Great article. Agree 100%.

@Sauru - segregation is not a good option, but it still goes on, especially here in the NY metro area. When it comes to schools and neighborhoods we're one of the highest in the country.
