Re: All Star Reserves?

He has 2.7 assists per 36 minutes. That's not exceptional but the Rockets are one of the top teams in assists per game so I doubt it's a problem.

Apart from that, his scoring is excellent. He has a TS% of .61% and an EFG% of .518%, goes to the line 9.9 times per 36 minutes (that's more than D-Wade!) and hits .883% of these shots.

He's still not an All-star

Re: All Star Reserves?

All that is Offense. His usage is still high while apg and rpg remain low in his career. Once the ball goes to his hands, it usually leaves in one way by shooting. No doubt he's a good scorer though. Not sure I would call him a legitimate all-star or an elite superstar though.

But he gets more FTAs than Wade! That itself is an all-star worthy accomplishment.

Yeah, I don't know that Kevin Martin will be a no-doubt All-Star ever in is career. I wouldn't be surprised if he slipped in to one or two at some point. I really do think a healthy Kevin Martin is an elite scorer in the NBA though, but this year would you really say he's more deserving than Monte Ellis? Ellis is a similar volume shooter who brings a few more assists and steals to the table than Martin, but overall is a similar player in terms of scoring points (albeit less three-pointers for Monte).

East Reserves:
Ray Allen
Paul Pierce
Rajon Rondo
Kevin Garnett
Chris Bosh
Al Horford
Raymond Felton

West Reserves:
Manu Ginobili
Russell Westbrook
Dirk Nowitzki
Tyson Chandler
Blake Griffin
Rudy Gay
Monte Ellis

The West reserves are assuming that Gasol starts for Yao.

If you were 2nd among guards (who took >550 shots per game) in TS% and managed to go to the line 9.9 times per game, you'd rather pass the ball? I don't get your argumentation. Martin is having 5.4 OWS, which is fourth among guards. A player must be all-around to play in the All-Star game? Dirk's a scorer, Bosh is posting 18/8 per 36 minutes and Monta Ellis ranks 68th in defensive win share among guards. All-around? Not so much.

I just want to say, if Kevin Martin wasn't on the West (where you have a lot of decent Gs), he would be an All-Star for sure. And he is very effective.

Re: All Star Reserves?

West reserves..

Manu Ginobli
Dirk Nowitzki
Pau Gasol
Deron Williams
Russel Westbrook
Blake Griffin
Tim Duncan

No Kevin Love.

All 4 Celtics deserved to make the team. Would have taken Brand, Boozer, maybe even Josh Smith over Joe Johnson. Sad Nash didn't make it. I reckon he'll be the replacement (sorry K-Love)

Re: All Star Reserves?

Blake made it! Awesome. So will he be playing in both games?

Re: All Star Reserves?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 12:02 pm

Blake and Russel are the only 2 first time all-stars.

Re: All Star Reserves?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 12:30 pm

Only 5 teams represented in the East. And no first-timers. And far too much Chris Bosh. Disappointing.

West is OK. Although, I'm waiting for Tony Parker to take Yao's spot.

It'll be Nash or Aldridge.

Hopefully Aldridge will make it in Yao's spot.

Very happy to see Manu back in the ASG :D

Re: All Star Reserves?

Speaking of Martin, from my perspective, I think he's not quite an all-star caliber player but he's in the same category as players like Luis Scola, Joe Johnson and Carlos Boozer. These players are star players who's not quite up there, but can light it up night in and night out. Their game is rather one dimensional, but they does their job and what they're good at well. There's no doubt that Martin is an elite scorer in the NBA, is very efficient, gets to the line at ease (though you can argue that he flops his way to the line most of the time but that still gets the job done) and is a player who can put up 30 points on a regular basis just like an all-star. However, these kind of players are not capable of making the team they're on a contender because they doesn't play other aspects of the game that well (or maybe they don't have enough help from their teammates because they're on a bad team). If you look at contenders like Boston, Lakers or Heat, it's quite obvious that their "star" players are much more all around and if not, they have a roster that provides both offense and defense at an elite level aka enough help from teammates.

I doubt if Kevin Martin will ever be an all-star, mainly because he doesn't have a huge fan base and also because he won't get voted in by the coaches. If he's on a good team, maybe. If he's in the east, maybe. But in the west where there's more deserving true "star" players, I don't think so.

On a different note, Griffin is going to participate in the Slam Dunk contest, the Rookie challenge and the All-Star game this coming All-Star weekend. He's going to be exhausted if he plays in all of those.

Re: All Star Reserves?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:43 pm

^That (too long to quote).

I don't agree with Kevin Martin being "one-dimensional", though. If by one-dimensional you mean "offensive-minded" without focusing on defense, then yes, that's true. He does what he does right, score the ball, get to the line. But his game is far from being one-dimensional. He can flat out shoot the lights out, get (or flop, as you said) to the line, and drive and finish pretty well at the basket. And as others have said, there are just better guards in the West that are better than him. If Steve Nash wasn't an All-Star this year, no way K-Mart would be one either.

As for the reserves, I'm a little surprised to see Manu in there, but nice to see him in the ASG nonetheless. Kevin Love or Steve Nash would be solid replacements in the reserves, if either Gasol or Duncan get to start at Center.

Well, Blake Griffin is very lucky as well. He is the face of NBA at other countries with Kevin Durant, so he got a chance.

Re: All Star Reserves?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 5:09 pm

Martin is NOT in the same category as Boozer and not even Johnson. He is in the same category as Scola , a good player ho will not be an all-star.

Sad to see eat going green and K.Love not making the west team.

Congratz to Blake though (Y)

David Stern better pick Lamar Odom, cause the coaches are nuts for not picking him
