I think I've been spoiled early on when I first started watching basketball by Vince Carter because these dunkers don't seem to have the creativity to play in the dunk contest.

He hasn't shown interest in competing since he won the 2000 contest and no one can force him to, so he's not a candidate.

David Lee beat him twice. In the All American Slam Dunk Contest, and in the Midnight Madness at University of Florida.

Yeah that line's got to go, it's stupid to keep declaring that every year. The last few contests have been pretty good for the most part and there's always usually at least a few memorable dunks each year. Some contests are better than others, just like some years the Playoffs or Finals series are more exciting than others.

True... What the dunk contest lacks is the 8 contestants on how they use to do it, and that brought the excitement with the three chances on the player as to do just to attempt the dunk. You wanna say that the dunk contest is back? Bring back the 8 slam dunk contestants that true fans followed along with the props, and the 3 chances that the player needs to do just to complete a dunk. Just like the Rookie All Star game. I know people doesn't want to see Rookie-Sophomore like I do, but bring it back as the East Coast vs. West Coast rookie/sophomore All Star Game or Rookie All Star game when it was the Sensations vs. Phenoms.

I always thought the Spurs vs. Pistons finals was the like a true fundamental basketball fan dream. I for one is one of the people who sat there watched it while people complained saying it's boring and there's no Kobe. :shake:

The thing about the dunk contest is everybody is looking for something new, yet we jump up when we see a nice dunk during a game that we have seen before but would get booed during a contest. If you take a look back at the older dunk contests, it was more of flare and power with a little creativity mixed in to create a unique dunk. I think the problem is that the players are trying to be too creative rather than just taking a dunk and tweaking it somehow to make it unique.

From the comments in that Bayless video.
he looks small because he has alligator arms. Bayless is 6'3 but only has a 6'3 wingspan...guys like Rose and Gordon are the same height but have 6'8-6'9 wingspans making them appear taller.

Haha. alligator arms thats funny. he does look short in appearance for a 6'3 guy. but he jumps out of the roof. Among blazer fans he is known as B-Rex because he is fierce as heck.

I'd like to see a field of eight but it's probably not happening anytime soon. Props are a mixed bag for me; Dwight Howard's Superman schtick was good, it got the crowd going and Gerald Green's birthday cake was something new but I don't want to see the contest come down to props too much. I wouldn't mind the Rookie Challenge going back to East/West or mixed teams like Sensations/Phenoms, you could even have twelve man rosters and include Rookies and Sophomores on each team if you want to keep the mix of first and second year players.

The All-Star Weekend seems to have lost its appeal for a lot of fans though but I don't get some of the complaints. We've got over a thousand matchups as each team plays through the 82 game regular season and two whole months of Playoffs where everyone can play some serious ball, the All-Star Weekend is supposed to be a fun spectacle. You always like to see players playing hard and with pride in the All-Star game itself but the "can you top this?" aspect is something I've always enjoyed too.

My only problem with the 2005 Finals was that the first four games were decided by more than ten points and not very competitive for long stretches with the home team winning each one, but the last three games (and the fact it went to seven games, really) saved the series for me. If those first four games had been just as competitive, that would've been one fantastic series from start to finish.

The 2007 Finals were anti-climactic but I think they were written off before they even began. I thought it had potential to be a good series with a decent amount of "subplots", the perennial power in the Spurs and the up-and-coming team with the Cavs, featuring one of the top stars of today appearing in his first (but hopefully not last) NBA Finals. When it was all said and done, it didn't help that the Cavs didn't put up much of a fight but I'm not sure if it would've mattered, a lot of people seemed to have decided it was a lousy series before the first game was even played.

Westbrook has my vote. It seems that Alexander has impressive vertical leap, but I don't think he's flexible and/or powerful enough to show something exciting. The same thing with Rudy. About Russell - he reminds me Steve Francis, whose performance during SDC 2000 is unforgetable to me. I know that contest was different in almost everything - different rules, different contestants, less props... But I think Westbrook could bring us back to these old times ;).

BTW. It's a scheme that Jamario or Nick Young are not inculded in that poll. Does anybody know who chose the candidates ?

Someone in the league's front office no doubt, probably based on players who indicated they'd be interested in competing.

I'm still not sure about that dunk from way beyond the free throw line, it sounded like he made it in the video they made leading up to the contest but the way they deliberately aimed the camera away allows doubt to creep in. If he can truly make that dunk then he should've pulled it out as his first attempt instead of having to use it as his "teammate assisted" dunk (which they should make optional, or add another dunk in the first round to compensate) because it just didn't work.

I watched the Dunk Contest again a couple of days ago, I definitely think that that dunk was extremely nice and underrated. it got four 9s and one 8.
He should have just made the dunk without setting high expectations by putting on the tape. Everybody was way to disappointed that he didn't jump from the marke to rate it fairly.

True, the videos are good at getting fans pumped for the contest but they do set the bar high before the event even begins and eliminate the element of surprise.

If I remember correctly, he only said he wasn't aware that one of his dunks had to involve a teammate, nothing else.

I don't remember Thomas complaining afterwards but he made some ill-advised remarks before the 2007 contest that rubbed people the wrong way.
