Before January

If Sheed's still there :D

I am not a Kwame hater, myself. He showed in LA that he could fill a specific role, playing defense. It's not his fault to be drafted #1 and traded for Caron Butler... If Diop can find a niche in this league, I can't see why he can't.

Because Diop knows what he can and can't do while Kwame doesn't know what he can and can't do and the things he knows he can't do he still tries to do it.

Also, Kwame has incredibly small hands for such a big guy.

That's why Jordan hated him so much.

I guess he played with gloves in High School. Otherwise MJ would have noticed something before drafting him...

He's big and he had "potential". I'd say that's all it took to seal the deal back in 2001.

no he just played with guys that were 6'4" or 6'5" centers in high school. so he looked like a god out there.

Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler were in that same draft class and both were also straight out of high school, yet Kwame Brown was considered the best high school player. How?

Seriously, Brown is just...argh. :wall:

Jackal,

Truer words have never been spken. I'd take Chandler or Curry over Kwame "No Hands" Brown any day.

i think the main thing here is "development". everyone back then saw that kwame had a potential, the problem is that he just didn't developed to the kind of player that they envisioned him to be...

Well people knocked on Curry's weight while Chandler lacked that offensive polish and needed to put on weight. I guess they just thought that Brown was that "perfect balance" of athleticism and strength.

"Upside" was a huge selling point for a while there, I seem to remember some talk about Battier slipping because while he was one of the most NBA ready and fundamentally sound in that draft class, he wasn't seen as having as much room to grow as a player. That's not to say he should have been first overall but the prospect of drafting the next Kobe or KG raised Kwame's stock.

Trends do seem to have a role in the draft.

They had the High School phenom with "potential"(just too many to single out)
They had the misterious european 7 foot shooter (Skita, etc...)
They had the Big and Massive, Maybe he can learn the game ( Olowokandi)

More recently, maybe out of trauma, the gm's began to give importance to distinguished collegiate careers, (morrisson, Reddick)

Now, we are in the "great Motor" era, and if you fancy throwing yourself too the floor a lot, you might be drafted in the lottery.

But what everyone is really looking for now is the "next" Chris Paul or Steve Nash...

Let's see how will it pan out, when they take the skinny spanish kid #1 overall next year

:D
