Granted, I suppose it would be more accurate to say it's not playing defense in the traditional sense. It's certainly effective and I agree that there is a simple answer, knock down free throws or get that player out of the game, but if it a cheap tactic should it really be allowed? I think it's an acceptable part of the game, except that the defense can foul away from the ball. I'd prefer not to see that allowed but if it's going to be, then teams will just have to deal with it and their opponents would be foolish not take advantage of it at opportune times.

That raises another question though. If it's going to be allowed, should the league go the other way and lift the restrictions altogether? If it's to be considered a legitimate tactic, unpopular or not, then why place the restriction on the final two minutes of the fourth quarter?

It's cheap but it's not as bad as the flopping in the league. They need to address that before they even touch this.

To me, flopping is to the NBA as terrorism is to the free world.

I'm all for the NBA eliminating flopping and the cheap and-one calls where the offensive player initiates the contact with non-calls. I'll certainly concede I find those calls a lot more bothersome than Hack-a-Shaq.
