DENVER - The Knicks remain very much in the hunt for Carmelo Anthony mostly because New York remains the Denver Nuggets All-Star forward's preferred destination.

A person familiar with the negotiations told the Daily News that talks between the Nuggets and Knicks are ongoing and classified the possibility of a deal with New York at "50-50."

"He'd like to play in New York," said the source, who requested anonymity. "But I don't see anything happening soon."

In order for the Knicks to acquire Anthony, team president Donnie Walsh would have to acquire at least one first-round pick to include in the deal.

The Nets can offer Denver the best package because they have multiple first-round picks.

The dilemma for the Knicks is whether or not to gut their roster for a player they could sign as a free agent after July 1. A deal for Anthony would likely have to include two of these three starters -- Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Landry Fields -- plus Eddy Curry's expiring contract and at least one first-round pick. The Knicks may also have to take on a player with a long-term contract. Al Harrington could be that player.

The Nets are in serious negotiations to complete a deal for Anthony, but the source indicated that no trade is imminent.

As for whether Anthony would sign a three-year, $65 million extension to play for the Nets, the source said "it hasn't gotten to that point yet.

"He's willing to listen to them if he gets close."

Amar'e Stoudemire recently said that he doesn't think the Knicks "need much" to become a contender. In fact, he said on Monday that the team has the pieces to possibly reach the conference finals.

At least one of Stoudemire's former teammates in Phoenix believes that Stoudemire wouldn't be thrilled about adding Anthony while Stoudemire contends that he'd be in favor of adding a superstar.

Anthony was quoted on Monday saying that the Knicks may not want him because they don't want to disrupt their chemistry.

The Knicks are 21-15 heading into Tuesday night's game against the Blazers and are in position to post their first winning season in 10 years.

"Everybody is happy with the team we have and what we're doing," Gallinari said. "We have to control what we can control. We can't worry about what happens on the outside."

Melo should just come as a free agent at this point. That way, next year, the Knicks could have a starting five of Felton, Gallinari, Anthony, Chandler, Stoudemire (holy crap that's an awesome starting lineup).

Or the Nuggets could catch fire and win 16 straight games and Carmelo becomes so happy with Denver he wants to stay an extra few years to help Denver win a title like my Live franchise story.

Agreed. When they have as good a shot as anyone of acquiring him next season - assuming he doesn't agree to an extension elsewhere, which it doesn't seem he will - there's no reason to gut a team that's winning games.

I wouldn't make that move at all. I know you need two superstars to be a legit contender, but we can get Carmelo in the off-season. I say we get a big man and a backup PG for now and ride out the rest of the year.

Walsh isn't Isiah, so I'd be shocked if he pulls the trigger.

I read some article recently which made a lot of sense, why would NY give up anything when Anthony has gone on the record to say he wants to play in New York? He's gone as far as saying if he's dealt elsewhere he won't re-sign with that team?

If I'm New York I'm sitting idle, let the whole thing play out...wait till the off season and welcome Anthony with open arms, a solid big man & a good team depth-wise. Win for NY & win for Carmelo.

Not exactly a win for Melo since his new salary might be less with the new CBA. A contract extension guarantees that he will still get a similar amount he's getting now once the new CBA kicks in. So it's all about Melo making a fuss for the extension instead of waiting it out for a new contract with a new team.
Once that's done, Walsh will probably retire and Isiah Thomas will be the GM again. Whoop whoop!

I think it's mostly impatience, but perhaps the situation with LeBron has left them unwilling to take any chances on someone dropping hints they'd like to play in New York as a sure sign they can make it happen. If they can trade for him now and sign him to an extension, they've got him for the rest of the season and beyond. If they wait, there's still a decent chance they miss out on him entirely.

That said, if I were in Walsh's position I'd still take that gamble and wait until the offseason. There seems to be a fairly good chance they can get him next year without giving up near as much (if anything significant at all) and the team they have right now is winning games.

I'm not sold on Randolph being a superstar by any means but he hasn't really gotten much of an opportunity to prove his worth so for them to slap the bust label on him is a little harsh and possibly premature. Still, he clearly doesn't seem to fit in with their style/rotation/future plans so better to get a draft pick for him than let him waste away on the bench.

You are what your record says you are. With a tougher schedule, Knicks are just a mediocre team. Defense, rebounding and bad coaching are our problems. D'Amphony's rotation only works in 2K where you can shut off progressive fatigue.

True, but I don't think they are too far off moving into the second tier of Eastern Conference teams (since they are third tier at the moment). I'm not sold on Mr. Gallinari unless he plays as a 6th or 7th man. He can not start on a good team, as simple as that.

A nice solid backup PG would be a good start. Shame Chris Duhon isn't around anymore. Magic don't need him. A hard working, quality big like Nene in the middle would make them a lot more difficult, then Turiaf can go back to his more comfortable role of off the bench madman. Then again getting a big of Nene's quality just isn't going to happen. They'd be better maybe trying to get a Joel Przybilla.

Potentially if they played their cards right, they could end up with a competitive Eastern Conference team of:

C- J.Przybilla/R.Turiaf/T.Mozgov
PF- A.Stoudemire/D.Gallinari/Rookie PF
SF- C.Anthony/W.Chandler/S.Williams
SG- L.Fields/K.Azubuike/B.Walker
PG- R.Felton/solid PG/T.Douglas

Obviously this is assuming Melo signs as free agent, they'd have to give up something for Przybilla type player.

Although I think most Knicks fans would prefer Przybilla/Stoudemire/Chandler/Fields/C.Paul with Gallo, Turiaf & Azubuike off the bench. I think that is a lot more positive team due to elite PG.

Anyways, enough dreaming for me on Knicks.
