NBA Union chief Billy Hunter says that they are ready to help Stephon Marbury and the New York Knicks find a mutually beneficial resolution to their situation should they ask for help, according to a report published by ESPN News Services.

"We may be engaging the team in trying to see if there's some kind of mutually beneficial position that the parties can arrive at," Billy Hunter, the executive director of the NBPA, told Bloomberg News. "Maybe there's somebody willing to trade for him. Maybe you can do a buyout. It depends on the parties."

Maybe some good news for Marbury in breaking the stalemate and resolving the situation one way or another. If he doesn't fit into D'Antoni's plans, so be it but if that's the case then both sides should come to some agreement so there can be a parting of the ways. It's a lot of money for the Knicks to pay someone who's not contributing to their season but it's even more wasteful if that person's still on the roster and if Marbury's tenure with the Knicks is over, better to put an end to that era sooner rather than later and move on without the situation hanging over their heads. The Knicks can then get on with their plans and Marbury can pursue other opportunities in the NBA (or judging by previous remarks he's made, perhaps Europe).

I don't see why the union should be involved. Marbury is part of the team roster, his playing time/fate rests in the hands of the Head Coach and the Manager of the team. Does this mean that any player who is not getting what they consider to be reasonable playing time can ask the union to step in and force the team to do something that they don't want to?

I can see how people can say he's getting payed a lot and not getting a chance to play but that's the Knicks' choice. They want to pay him that much to sit on the bench, so be it. That's New York's loss in paying all that luxury tax!

EDIT: I read the article in full and now understand what the Union will try to do. I guess since Marbury doesn't have an agent he is also at a disadvantage. So i guess the Union will try to make sure he's payed and can't do anything about him not playing. That's better. :)

Wow. Knicks basketball is back. Nate Robinson: Showtime baby. He is such an ignitor, he is such energetic! Did you watch his interview? He said: "Yes, i am me! I hustle, that's what i do!". (Y)

Let's not get crazy. This team will be lucky to get 30-35 wins(same for next season). Knicks basketball will be back once we land a superstar FA in 2010(LeBron, Bosh, Wade or Paul).

Yeah, it's more about trying to find a resolution that works for everyone but I guess above all helps Marbury out of a tough situation (since it is the Players Union after all). If D'Antoni doesn't want to play Marbury then the Union can't force him too but I think it's appropriate for them to mediate in a situation like this and help both sides come to an agreement.

D'Antoni's system plus Chris Paul will be insane.

Wow, the Gallinari pick was a stroke of genius, wasn't it?

Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:27 am

Who would you have taken Jeffx? With Curry out of the rotation, perhaps they could have gone with Brook Lopez. He's putting up decent numbers for the Nets for someone playing less than 20 minutes per game. Or if not him, perhaps Jason Thompson or Roy Hibbert.

Thu Nov 13, 2008 1:06 pm

wilson chandler 27 pts!!! wow u are lookin at a future franchise fo tha knicks.

Thu Nov 13, 2008 1:25 pm

At the time, I wanted Bayless, Andrew. But Lopez makes more sense. He'd give NY much needed size. At least he'd be playing now.

Gallinari's probably done for the year, and you know how back injuries are. When the Knicks picked him, me and my friends said, another Frederic Weis. Unreal - another in a long line of Knick busts.

...but Chandler is the real deal.

Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:29 pm

Woooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooo!!!

Chandler 11-12, 27 points...and a 3PT party. 29-point-win. Why can't this just happen every game? ;)

Anyone but an injured (he had suffered injuries to his back last season and was still recovering,) immature, spoiled, good for nothing, think-he's-God-just-because-he's played-(badly)-in-the-Euroleague twenty-year-old Italian.

For Jesus' sake, how can you waste a #6 first round pick on someone like him?

That damn schedule! You dont get to play the Griz every day.

Fri Nov 14, 2008 2:11 am

The Knicks should get a special schedule. All games against 15-year-olds...

Fri Nov 14, 2008 2:25 am

Knicks are 5-3, and the playoffs seem in sight for New York this year. Knicks set a franchise record with 19 3ptm last night, and the tempo is really working for these guys.

Wasn't it a case of connections, Gallinari's father being an old friend (teammate?) of Mike D'Antoni?

Yes, Vittorio Gallinari played with D'Antoni for Olimpia Milano coach Dan Peterson in the mid 80's. Peterson was also involved in the deal. I just cannot understand how the Knicks' management let the deal go through.

To me, it's Walsh's first big screw-up.

I guess it's the nature of the beast when it comes to business and nothing new in the NBA (the connection between ex-Tar Heels comes to mind) but it's perhaps not the approach you want to adopt with a top ten pick. To D'Antoni's credit, he's not favouring him and giving him minutes he shouldn't, though that doesn't make the pick look any better (and right now that isn't an option anyway).

Some better news on the Marbury front: Marbury And Walsh Begin Buyout Talks

Seems to be the best thing for both sides if he's not going to play for the Knicks again. The Knicks still get their cap relief and have opened up a roster spot to bring in someone who has a shot at playing (Patrick Ewing Jr perhaps?) and Marbury gets to pursue other options.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! (N)

What stupid moves by New York. I am not talking about cap space and getting rid of Randolph's contract but Crawford and Randolph were the Knicks' leading scorers. I really liked these two and wanted to play an Assocation in 2K9 with them but now both are gone. Mobley? Harrington? Tim Thomas? I don't like them and I don't dislike them. Mardy Collins could have developped over the next years, too. I´m pissed off.

Lee, Harrington and Chandler all lack size. Curry won´t play much.

No, I won´t make these trades in 2K9. Gotta play with Ewing, Oakley, Johnson...
