That doesn't even make any sense.

Just remember this, in 10 years Kobe will be 38 years old. Michael Jordan was 34 years old at the beginning of his final championship season. MJ also took 2 years off when he was 30 years old. That saved him 2 years of battering in the NBA, which gave him a little more time before age took him down. He won 3 more titles, and retired again. He took 4 years off. He came back at age 38 (the same age you believe Kobe will surpass Mike), and at that point had a total of 6 years rest during his career. He averaged 22.9ppg 5.7rpg and 5.2apg compared to the 30.1ppg 6.4rpg 6.1apg he had averaged 10 years earlier. At age 39, when the 2002-03 season began, he averaged 20.0ppg 6.1rpg 3.8apg - nice averages, but no where near his season of 32.6ppg 6.7rpg 5.5apg that he had 10 years earlier. Do you see how age effects NBA players? Do you see how it effected the greatest player in the modern NBA even though he took a total of 6 years off from the NBA?

Kobe Bryant has not retired from the game, he hasnt taken a break. He skipped college, and despite his athleticism, still took a beating during his first years because he was so young. You asked "If MJ was so good in his final 3 seasons with the Bulls, how good is Kobe going to be at that point?" You have to remember what I said earlier. MJ had 2 years off from the NBA at that point, plus he was still only 34 when he began his final season with Chicago. I can't see how you believe that Kobe, as great a player as he is, will be better than a guy he has failed to match throughout his career when he is 38 years old, 4 years older than when Mike started his final championship season?

Mike has been ahead of Kobe step for step throughout their respective careers. MJ took 6 years off in total, and still age got him at 38. Why do you think Kobe, who has not taken time off, nor matched Mike in any way throughout his career, will be immune to age and put up better stats, win more championships and become a better overall player at 38? It will not happen.

Well said, i agree. Here's something else to squash that debate, by the numbers it will be nearly impossible for Kobe to finish with a 30+ point per game average for his career, let alone surpass MJ's career numbers. As of year 10, Kobe's career ppg is 23.9.

Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:37 pm

Exactly, he may get better (statistically) for another 5 years max, but even if he does hes not going to be averaging 40ppg, which is probably what he will need to average to bring that career average up to MJ's level. Numbers aside, Kobe will never be the player Mike was.

How does it not?

Ok we can Agree on this: He's a definite HOF

SO youre saying, Flite_23, that he's NOT going to get another ring?

He's not going to collect 2-4 MVP's?

He's not going to possibly be DPOY?

I think he will get all 3 of these awards in the NEXT 5-8 years. He might not be the greatest, but he will come pretty close. He will decline eventually, but he will still be productive throughout his career.

That being said, Lebron won't be at KB8's level UNTIL he wins some titles.

He will probably get 1 more ring. He will probably win one MVP award, if not 2. But not 3. And theres no way in hell KB is getting DPOY... hes an overrated defender

Looking at age here, Kobe's what, 28, 29? He's just finishing off his prime and he won't be the same when he's 31. He has the possibility of winning an MVP, but that's ONLY if his team does well in the regular season. For DPOY, he's not going to win it if he focuses all of his energy on offense. And looking at the future outlook of the Lakers vs other emerging teams, I really, really, really doubt he'll win another ring.

LeBron may never win a ring, but looking at his age and his numbers, he's going to be the league's hottest for many years to come. Sorry to say, but he's going to dwarf Kobe in terms of publicity and perhaps numbers if LeBron continues his dominance at this rate to his early 30's.

maybe.
He's not going to possibly be DPOY?

maybe after Big Ben, KG, Ron Artest, Raja Bell, Bruce Bowen, Tayshaun Prince, and so on retire, and Kobe finds the foutain of youth.

That being said, Lebron won't be at KB8's level UNTIL he wins some titles.

He has about 10 years or so to do that. Kobe has 5 years max to eclipse MJ, and alot of ground to make up.

lol ok

I hate to say that.

But In my mind Kobe is one of, if not THE greatest. That's waht i'm trying to prove.

That's the only point i'm trying to Exploit

Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:14 pm

U can say that, but ur asking for it when u say kobe is better than jordan

Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:49 pm

Kobe is one of the all time greats, but not the greatest. I think even Kobe will tell you he's not in Jordan's league though. Here's a thought: Kobe may not finish ahead of Shaq in the greatest discussion.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 10:41 am

Kobe's not as good as Jordan. But saying he's not in his league is asinine. Why do you think we always have this discussion? And also fellas you're going to have to start accepting that Jordan's days at the top are numbered. LeBron is for real.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 10:51 am

Just like Penny Hardaway and Grant Hill were "for real"?

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:16 am

Wha? :| I never said and or thought either of those players could become the greatest of all-time at no point in their careers. But if you're trying to say injuries could prevent him from reaching his full potential, that's a valid point. Even though I don't see it happening, dudes built like a tank.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:26 am

I think Matthew is saying that you can't fully measure a person's career when it's barely started. LeBron's done a lot of amazing things thus far, but it is a little premature to compare LeBron to Jordan, especially since the biggest similarity between the two players is that they both wear 23.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:36 am

LeBron is for real.

already established 3 years ago.

But saying he's not in his league is asinine.

Well, so be it, because he's not. He may share a similar, familiar style, do things that remind us of what once was, but there are 2 major things that set them apart:

1. Kobe's a rerun, MJ's the original.

2. Intelligence. MJ's understanding of the game is what Kobe cannot emulate.

Jayson Williams was more powerfully built and look at how his career ended.

Wow, so convincing. Kobe is trying to emulate the greatest player of all time (in a similar way MJ tried to emulate West and Dr J), and thats somehow a negative factor in Kobe's greatness?

When asked Jordan said he didn't get to see NBA games when he was young. But we don't know that to be true. And he did a horrible job emulating the Doctor, he surpassed him in every way. :D

Not negative to his greatness, but he's not above Jordan. I put emphasis on basketball genius.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:49 am

Kobe may one day do the exact same thing to Mike. He's in a position where thats actually possible.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:52 am

That's true, when that day comes I will change my stance. We must respect the history of the game too.

Wed Sep 27, 2006 11:53 am

Absolutely, and I dont think anyone in their right mind can actually place Kobe ahead of Jordan just yet. But its a good comparison, becuase quite frankly, I have kobe at the number 2 shooting guard ever right now behind only Jordan.
