and (hopefully) the Charlotte Hornets.
The New Orleans Hornets are expected to become the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.
A change of the nickname has been expected since Tom Benson purchased the team.
Benson owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.

Gayle Benson, Benson's wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold.

i could definitely see gold being in there, especially with the Saints using gold and the possibility gold-colored musical instruments/gold-colored beak. whether they do black & gold like the Saints is a possibility. navy blue, red and gold remind me of the lebron-era cavs.

Hornets name probably coming back to Charlotte. I'm calling that right now.

Michael Jordan said he would consider that option, so it's possible. I would love to have the original Charlotte Hornets back.

THE MIGHTY PELICANS.
^ Try say that with a straight face.
Who comes up with these names? A 50 year old woman? A 5 year old boy? They should've gone with "New Orleans Brass". That would've been cool as fuck. But nope, they've gone with a big goofy bird that is known for swallowing large loads. It's cool to see Charlotte get Hornets back though.

i thought the brass was probably the best of the three, but it it might be too similar to Jazz.
who knows? they might be able to pull the pelicans off... honestly it couldn't be much worse than the THunder

Those Brass images that were floating around were taken from an old minor league hockey team that the Hornets forced out of New Orleans Arena.
IIRC, somebody used the logos in the dotorg Sim League since we allowed moving and renaming teams.

Well, at least Charlotte can possibly get the Hornets name back. A shame Utah couldn't come up with something new and take part in a three team nickname trade with Charlotte and New Orleans.
With that change, I'd suggest that they'll easily have the worst name in the league. In all fairness there's a decent amount of surprise at the name change at the moment and in time most people will probably get used to it, much like the other team names that aren't considered to be that great. However, it doesn't seem like a good fit for an NBA team.

I believe the Millers want to the keep the Jazz name because they consider it an institution and core to the franchise identity at this point. That when you mention Utah Jazz after three decades you don't think "weird name" you think Stockton and Malone, lots of wins and two NBA Finals trips against Jordan.

Mark Eaton is always forgotten.

No wonder he's a hermit in the jungle.

As long as Charlotte gets the Hornets nickname and color scheme it's all find with me, plus this is how it should have been done in the first place with Charlotte keeping their name and New Orleans getting a brand new franchise.
BTW, am I the only guy who still wants Seattle to get the Sonics franchise again? would be a good opportunity if one of the less attractive teams goes into financial difficulties (except the Kings who I actually like).

You got that right. What a horrible name for an NBA team.

I'd like to see it happen and the fans deserve to see it happen, though I'd be a little disappointed to see it happen at the expense of another team, whose lineage would end the way the Sonics did.

I don't mind the Pelicans name at all. Hell, it's a lot better than naming a franchise after your owner's first name and then sticking "cats" at the end.

cool mockup. could use a better pelican though.

that couldve worked but wouldve been unoriginal and a blatant rip-off of that hockey team
when they mentioned brass, i was picturing more like the all-star logo

To be fair, a bobcat is at least a real animal, albeit not as imposing or impressive as other members of the cat family (or other animals that NBA teams take their names from). Of course, the fact that it allowed Robert Johnson to slip his name in there does make it a little cheesy.

Damn, that's a bad name... I only like the fact that Charlotte has the chance to claim the "Hornets" name again, and that's a great thing.

The Pelican is the state bird of Lousiana. I've lived in Charlotte for almost 17 years now. There aren't many bobcats near Charlotte.

Probably because they prefer mountains not large urban centers.
You'd probably see more living in Boone or Cherokee. Hell, probably even Asheville
