Retiring for medical reasons, less than a week after being announced as the starter? If so, it's phenomenal news for the Blazers, who can now save the Amnesty Clause, or use it on Camby to get under the cap. It's sad to see one of my all-time favorite players retire, but this is for the best.

I'm just worried the Grizzlies are going to sign him, then have him play 11 games.
Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:50 am
So Blazers fired Rich Cho for knowing about and preparing for this in advance?
Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:35 am
well the blazers have been known for pushing players to retire recently
Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:26 am
They should retire his jersey and make him the new GM.

As a player who din't rely as much on speed as on his quickness with the ball and smarts, i don't see why he should retire. I know he's hurt now, but no one says u can't come back a year later. He'll only be 28-29 next season. I'm sayin this because i admire this man. That win against Mavs was one of the best performances i have ever seen.

You obviously dont understand the human body. This isnt like an acute injury that's going to heal. Just walking is progressively destroying his knees. He needs to call it while he can still move. Sad to see him go but health has to come first in all instances and being able to walk into old age i think would be valuable to most people.

I do understand, but look at DeJuan Blair, K-Mart. They too tore everything, yet somehow both are still able to dunk. Maybe his case is a little different, but all i'm sayin is i will be very sad to not see Roy play anymore

One thing is a tore ACL, you can tore it 2, 3 times nad it will heal, you won't be the same but you have your ligament.... but Roy's case is different.. He doesn't have any cartilage in his knees, when he walks, it's bone to bone contact... Whenever he plays running or as a shooter, the bones keeps banging and it will affect his entire life. And it must be pretty painful
Maybe there is any kind of surgery to re-generate his knees, I hope so. It's a shame to see a great player retire and at a young age. Two years ago he was a Superstar.
Let's hope he can return to the court in the years to come

Ye gods. Neither of the posts before me understand medicine..This isnt a tear. Again, this isnt an acute (read: healable) injury. this is a chronic condition. It will ONLY get worse and there is NOTHING they can do. There's not going to be a new surgery. I'm sad to see him go too but its the smartest thing he can do. Its not a little different, its the difference between pulling a calf and if your calf was slowly ceasing to exist. The guy will be crippled (not that theres anything wrong with that) by 40 if he doesnt stop playing now.

Sucks.
Sat Dec 10, 2011 10:28 am
What's sad for me the most is that we probably only got to taste a glimpse of his prime. The guy could have been a Kobe-Wade level player.
Sat Dec 10, 2011 10:56 am
The bone on bone does have a surgery for it. Grandmom had the same thing (bone on bone due to loss of all cartilage) and about 8 years ago had steel bolts inserted in both knees. No pain but no running around and shit either..but there is a surgery for it.

That's a real shame. There's definitely a silver lining for the Blazers with insurance picking up most of his contract and his salary coming off the books in a year's time, saving the amnesty clause for use on someone else, but the guy is a great talent and it's sad that his career is being cut short like this. It sounds like the smartest thing he can do from a personal standpoint but no doubt it's a frustrating and heartbreaking decision to make as well. What could've been...

This is going to be one of those Shaun Livingston-like success stories.

Brandon Roy is one player that I loved to watched & he's great. He'll go down as one of my favourite players of all-time. Such is life.
Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:37 pm
Brandon ROy goes down as legendary in a weird way for me. Sad to see him go like this, same type of Yao-storyline.
Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:06 pm
Always sucks to see a player retire with chronic injury problems. Hopefully, in a couple of years, he will be still related to the Blazers in some way.

Right but the idiots were talking like they were magically going to fix his knee so he could play again. that does not exist. They can't make synthetic cartilage and install it successfully so he could continue playing.
