Stephon Marbury headed to China

Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:09 am

Story

Twice NBA All Star point guard Stephon Marbury will become the highest profile American to play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after he agreed to join China's Shanxi Club.

The 32-year-old, a free agent since leaving the Boston Celtics last season, had agreed a deal with the northern club and would arrive in Shanxi next week, the team announced on their official website (http://www.sxcba.com).

"The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season," said Shanxi boss Wang Xingjiang.

If Bonzi Wells' performance in the CBA is any indication of the level of competition and opportunities afforded to former NBA players, I suppose we can expect Marbury to at least come close to averaging a triple double.

lol Starbury is such a joke. Glad he's working though.

Shanxi last season hired former NBA player Bonzi Wells, who scored as many as 50 points a game. The contract ended after less than two months when Wells went on vacation but failed to return on time.

I think Starbury will be a star... maybe he will like it so much that he will stay.

In two months time we'll probably see an article with something like this: "Stephon Marbury scored 55 points today to go along with 12 rebounds and 15 assists."

More like 100, i mean, if Bronzi Wells can score 50...Marbury (who has a career high of 50 in the NBA) will score more then that, especially since he is a ball hogging PG

Valor can watch games and highlights and tell us how he goes. :)

Does HK have a team in CBA Valor? I remember Guangzhou Tigers when I was over there with Yi Jianlian.

Nice story. Maybe Marbury will stay in China because he can be a basketball legend over there.

It was an opportunity to allow my brand to grow in a different distribution channel," he said, referring to his Starbury line of low-priced athletic shoes and clothing.

It will still be ripped off by the Chinese no matter how cheap is the product.
On the court, he wears black hightops embroidered with his Chinese name, "Ma Bu Li."

Given Bonzi Wells' performance while he was over there, I'm guessing it's a few steps below the NBA level to put it mildly.

Marbury named Chinese all-star MVP

Really says something about the competition level there.

I read that they made a special exception for him to be allowed to play in the game, since the CBA's rules don't allow players who sign on midseason to be eligible for the All-Star game. From the sounds of things, he's won over the fans and enjoyed popularity that he's lost in the later stages of his NBA career.

Marbury agrees to 3 more years with Chinese team

Marbury, 33, will play two more years and may be asked to become an assistant coach in the third, Shanxi said in an announcement on its website. His salary will be the same as last season, which was never publicly announced, but team owner Wang Xingjiang had said he offered Marbury $100,000 to play half a season in China.

As part of the deal, the ownership of Shanxi Zhongyu will create a company to produce and sell apparel and shoes from the point guard’s “Starbury” brand. The company will also open three Starbury shops, though details have not been decided, the team said.
