2009 NBA Awards

Mon Apr 13, 2009 1:25 pm

With the NBA season about to come to a close, who do you think should win the annual NBA awards. Without going off about how the awards are pointless and stupid, post your picks. Mine:

MVP: LeBron James
ROY: Brook Lopez
DPOY: Dwight Howard
MIP: Rajon Rondo
6th Man: Jason Terry
Coach: Nate McMillan
First team: Paul, Wade, LeBron, Howard*, Gasol
Second team: Roy, Bryant, Nowitzki, Duncan, Yao
Third team: Billups, D. Williams, Pierce, Garnett, Shaq
D-First Team: Paul, Rondo, LeBron, Duncan, Howard
D-Second Team: Bryant, Wade, Battier, Iguodala, Garnett
Rookie Team 1: Rose, Fernandez, Gasol, Love, Lopez
Rookie Team 2: Westbrook, Gordon, Oden, Mayo, Chalmers

The Defensive and Rookie teams I know nothing about.

As a note, unless they've changed it, the Rookie Teams are not selected by position. So you could have Rose, Chalmers, Westbrook, Gordon and Mayo all on one team if you were so inclined. (Or Lopez, Lopez, Love, Gasol and Beasley.) Oh, and you can have ties and put seven or more players on the team. (See: 2006-07.)

MVP: LeBron James.
DPOY: Dwight Howard. (Orlando's the second best defensive team in the league after Boston and within shouting distance of them. As is Cleveland, giving both LeBron and Rondo a claim at this with one difference. Howard is head and shoulders above the rest of his team, Rondo and LeBron are elite defenders on elite teams with a player who is probably a better defensive player on their teams.)
ROY: I can't decide. I want to give it to Marc Gasol, Kevin Love and Brook Lopez. It should be a debate between Gasol and Lopez, but I can't overlook Love's absolutely incredible offensive rebounding.
MIP: Devin Harris is essentially the same player he was, he's just using more possessions, so he went from "soon to be All-Star" to meeting expectations. Kevin Durant made the same leap, but he's second year. Same story for Danny Granger. Nene is just coming back from injury. Paul Milsap saw a 50% increase in minutes, otherwise didn't really change. Rondo turned into a superstar. Jeff Green like Durant has the second year thing but went from worthless to good. But he was in the league and playing big minutes, whereas Von Wafer was barely sticking in the league despite a good NBDL performance. I'd rather they split this into two seperate awards "Rising Star" and "Hidden Gem" personally and got rid of the silly "Most Improved" idea. Granger, Harris, Durant and Rondo would compete for the first.
6th: I like both Jason Terry and Anderson Varejao a lot, Lamar Odom too. Wouldn't mind any of these winning though, plus Milsap though he's just three games short of starting 41, they've all been right about equal. With Terry starting the fewest games by far, so he's the choice by a hair over Varejao and Milsap.

All-NBA: Howard, Gasol, James, Wade, Paul. (I took minor liberties and made Gasol a forward since at least 47 of his starts were alongside Bynum.)
All-NBA Second: Yao, Duncan, Nowitzki, Bryant, Roy. (Would've loved to make Bryant or Roy a forward and brought Billups up knocking Dirk down.)
All-NBA Third: Shaq, Lewis, Pierce, Billups, Rondo. (Sorry, Nene. Gotta go with the Big Fella probably one last time.)

All-Rookie: Lopez, Gasol, Love, Fernandez, Rose.
All-Rookie Second: Gordon, Augustin, Beasley, Westbrook, Oden, Speights.

I'm not entirely happy with the defense, I'm still working on them, so I just took a quick stab at it.
All-Defense: Howard, Duncan, James, Rondo, Paul.
All-Defense Second: Yao, G. Wallace, Pierce, Iguodala, Wade. (I gotta knock KG off, because the guy won't even play 2000 minutes this season. He's one of the three best defenders, but if he's not on the court he's not having an impact.)

MVP: JeBron James (yes, it's not D-Wade, cuz Cavs has an Awesome record, and Miami have lost a few really winable games because of D-Wade's poor shooting, caused of his fatigue! but i'm really dissapointed that such a great season goes to nothing, but D-Wade has motivation for next seasons tho!)
ROY: Derrick Rose - 1000% out of 100% - great season for a rookie and a lot of games was won by him
DPOY: Dwight Howard - 100%
MIP: Devin Harris - 1000% out of 100% - he becomes a true star this season!
6th Man: Jason Terry - played great off the bench, one of the best seasons
Coach: George Karl - Denver has 2-d best record on west, and with who? Melo + Billups, thats freaking amazing
First team: Paul, Wade, LeBron, Howard, Shaq
Second team: Roy, Bryant, Nowitzki, Duncan, Gasol
Third team: Billups,Pierce, Melo, Garnett, Yao
D-First Team: Paul, Wade, LeBron, Garnett, Howard
D-Second Team: Rondo, Bryant, Battier, Prince, Duncan
Rookie Team 1: Rose, Mayo, Gasol, Beasley, Lopez
Rookie Team 2: Westbrook, Gordon, Chalmers, Fernandez, Love

Moron its his opinion, just coz Wade is having a great season doesn't mean he is better than Kobe. The fair thing would be Kobe and Wade in all-NBA 1st teams as starting guards, but then again, there you have Paul slipping away in the second team....

EDIT: what the fuck does USA gold medal have to do with NBA regular season??? are you living under a fucking rock, Kobe and Paul are also gold medalists

USA GOLD MEDAL WINNER??????????????

Because this is so decisive whether he'll be in the 1st ot 2nd All NBA Team..
edit: got it before me.

I'd say there's only space for two out of Bryant, Wade and Paul, this season I think CP will slip to the second team. It should be Kobe though.

i think, and this would be a point of bigger part of the whole nba fans community, that if D-Wade wins in fan voting for MVP award, Wade took #1 place, LBJ - #2 and Kobe #3, it should mean smth, and D-Wade is deffenitely >>> CP3

Why is debating Wade's place on the All-NBA teams "screwing up a thread"?

Is this just supposed to be a list thread? Diddy's the only one who even took any kind of attempt at giving reasons.

Although I'm also a D-Wade fan, Kobe and Lebron also won the Gold :D So did Dwight and Paul, who are most likely in the All-NBA 1st team.

So that isn't a big argument.

Re: 2009 NBA Awards

Tue Apr 14, 2009 5:41 am

I figured I'd stop it before everyone gets sidetracked on another Wade tangent. Diddy barely gave any reasons in a cognitive way either.

If you want to defend his honor, go for it, but the CAPs, and the personal attacks can get checked at the door.

Re: 2009 NBA Awards

Tue Apr 14, 2009 5:53 am

How is debating the merits of a players consideration for an award getting sidetracked?

He may not have given good reasons, but we already know he's special and at least he tried. And by questioning someones choices (even though Andrew was just making predictions, not "stating his opinion" as someone claimed...and even if it is about his crush) he came close to at least starting some discussion.

A thread of just lists is far worse than debating Paul, Wade and Kobe's places on the All-NBA teams. I considered making a coherent argument in favor of Wade and Paul over Kobe (which is absurdly easy since both had better seasons), but I guess that's sidetracking the thread. (Unlike this, which is very relevant.)

Man ya just chill and look at my list people....GO LAKERS!!!

MVP: LeBron James (The was he has played and his team record. If he just had 3 more rebounds and assists to his stats, He would have had triple double stats.)
ROY: Derrick Rose (Leading his team into the playoffs and he is the top Rookie in Assists and 2nd in Points.)
DPOY: Dwight Howard (His team has the top defense in the league due to him blocking 3 shots a game, and rebounding 14 boards and scoring 21 per game.)
6th: Jason Terry (20 points off the bench each night yo!)
MIP: Devin Harris (Is a proven Star and has meshed well with Carter forming the league's top backcourt.)
Coach: Stan Van Gundy (See Dwight Howard. And he has 3 All-Stars in his team with Howard, Lewis, and Nelson and even Turkoglu could be one. Also their record explains that.)
Executive of the Year: Danny Ferry (Bringing in Mo Williams has given LeBron his possible MVP Award and Coah Mike Brown a possible COY award. Including a Ring (if they even get there.)

All-NBA 1st: Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Tim Duncan, Dwight Howard
All-NBA 2nd: Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Yao Ming

As I clearly stated in my post, it's my prediction, not my personal pick. Right or wrong, I predict that the votes will go in Kobe's favour as they quite often do in the annual awards.

Re: 2009 NBA Awards

Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:26 am

I dont understand why many give Garnett and Pierce the nod over Gasol and Nowitzki for the All NBA 2nd team spot.

Pau is playing a heck of a season and no one recognizes? 3.3 Off boards/.56%FG/37.1MPG/3.5APG

Dirk is playing one of the better seasons of his career ... 25.8PPG/.475%FG/.89%FT/37.6MPG

By taking a look at Pierce's stats Im not impressed. I know his importance in the clutch and his scoring ability cannot be measured exactly but in my opinion he is not playing very well.

Garnett only played 31.1MPG in 52 games of the season. Even if you dont care about his stats which do not show his defensive ability he just did not play enough minutes to get any votes at all ...

Re: 2009 NBA Awards

Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:58 am

Agreed with hova. I think there are players that played better than Pierce or KG. But usually, 1 or 2 or more are likely to be chosen from top teams in the NBA, so if 1 of the Celtics deserve to be there, I would give a nod to KG over Pierce, for the main reason being Boston's struggle when he was injured.

Just like Wade to the Heat, I think Dirk has been as much important to the Mavericks making the playoffs. I think he was amazing this season whether he makes a second NBA team or not.

I hope so too! But I thought you were starting to hate Wade. :seriouscat: You gain +1.5 respect point for supporting Wade once again.

Senor Gringo and his Joel Anthony. What's with that!
