Report: O'neal for Marion trade

IMO, he's not what the Raptors need. I mean yes, he's better than any of the SFs they currently have, but he's been pretty mediocre this year. He can't really create his own offense and struggles in a halfcourt setting. His contract does end by the end of this current season though. Marcus Banks will also be going to Toronto if the trade goes through. Don't really know much about him other than the fact he's ridiculously fast. Though if even Chris Quinn is ahead of him...

Jermaine O'Neal's play has been alright, as he brought toughness on the defensive end (lack the stats to either support or go against this though). His offensive production was around where I predicted, nothing too surprising about his numbers there. Wasn't too shocking of the possibility of JO getting traded as Bargnani has played pretty well as of late. If he wasn't moved, his contract was going to end in 2010 anyways.

I don't think it would be that bad for either team but I agree that it would be a panic button trade for the Raptors, making a change for the sake of it while retaining cap flexibility looking towards 2010. I'm guessing they're concerned about O'Neal's trade value though. I believe he's still capable of being one of the league's best big men but he hasn't posted numbers to back that up in a couple of years and his nagging injuries don't help either, so given the season hasn't gone exactly to plan perhaps they want to make a move while a decent deal is on the table.

SO'Neal for Marion, Banks last year Suns - Heat, second trade JO'Neal for Marion, Banks lol
Raptors dont need Jermaine O'Neal cuz Bargnani is doing good, but Marion is not even an all star any more, his shots are inconsistent and is 30. Marion can't have any 53 double double seasons anymore. Banks would be Toronto's 4th point guard if this trade gets done. Dont see how this will work out for raptors. For the Heat, they could acutally play Beasley at small forward and start JO'Neal with Haslem. I could see how this would benefit the Heat>Raptors.

That's underrating Marion a bit. He's certainly not playing at a level that will earn him an All-Star berth this year but it's not like all his talent has disappeared overnight and he's useless just because he's turned 30. He's no further removed from playing at that level than Jermaine O'Neal, anyway.

I like this trade for both teams. For Toronto you get a good defender in Marion and a good backup PG in Marcus Banks. Marion wasn`t doing that good cause he doesnt have a Nash type of PG to make him better. But when he goes to the Raptors, his problem is resolved with Calderon. Plus you don't need O'Neal if Andrea is playing up to his potentical. For Miami you finally get some defense and size inside with O'Neal and if healthy, a good scorer to help Wade. Then move Beasley to SF and start him with Haslem

Well, Bargnani is doing good, they don't have a quality SF, I mean, Jamario Moon is their starter, this would be a great addition to the Raptors, coz Marion has some Play-off experience, hopefully they will make it out of the 1st round if this trade happens

Unlike many here, I find it hard that O'neal's been good for the Raptors. Aside from injury issues, he hasn't been a star like at all. Yes, he can offer interior D and can get a few boards but he also seems to use same floor space as Bosh. Twin Tower build obviously didn't turn out to be that great in terms of winning, so why not consider a trade early rather than late. If they can get Marion for O'neal, it should be great for the Raptors. However, I don't think O'neal is what the Heats need. I'd rather want to see Kaman coming to Maimi than O'neal atm.

Pat Riley has denied a trade is imminent, which as we know could mean the deal could actually happen as much as it could turn out to be a rumour that got out of control.

For Miami, I think it's a case of moving Marion while they can still get something for him rather than risking him leaving via free agency this coming offseason with the Heat getting nothing in return. They'd get cap relief of course but they can get the same with Jermaine O'Neal's contract expiring after next season, just in time for the 2010 hoopla. They'd also be able to get Marcus Banks' contract - which doesn't expire until 2011 - off the books and trim another $4 mil from the payroll. They would give them a better opportunity to re-sign Wade to a big contract and still have some cap space left over to at least bring in a solid third or fourth player, if not someone pushing All-Star calibre. They'd also get to rent O'Neal for a season and a half and if things work out, perhaps re-sign him to a smaller contract in 2010 as well.

I see.

I think Wade is likely to stay with Miami unless something goes really bad. But I wanted to see them becoming sort of a contender before 2010, so Wade doesn't change his mind about staying. For sure, Marion is our best bet to improve the roster. But we brought him in at the cost of Shaq O'neal. The best big man in the history of NBA. So got greedy and I just wanted to see someone better than Jermaine if we were to trade Marion. Jermaine's constant injury problem is always a concern and I don't know at what level of skills he still possess so it seems like it's quite a bit of risk there. But if we can free cap space to sign another star and keep Wade, I wouldn't mind taking him.

Agreed, the chances of Wade staying seem pretty good regardless of what happens with Marion but if they trade him it opens up more minutes for Beasley again and could still allow them to get cap relief come 2010. If O'Neal is healthy then so much the better. There are probably better trades that could be made but none of them have come to fruition either and this one might not be too bad.

Andrew right, that's the main point in this trade - get rid of 17 mln from Marion's contract and + 4 mln from Banks's! it's perfect scenario! we have 21 mln free money to spend in the off season instead of 17+ useless banks on the ballance! so, i say - GO PAT, get o'neal! and then, in the off-season we can have all we want! almost!

Well if it won't happen, that sucks as Bosh won't be interested in playing in Canada anymore. its really hard to get an all-star to play in toronto, I think most of players toronto has gotten in the last few years are outcasts

Perhaps but then with Marion's impending free agency, he could be gone at the end of the year anyway.

Okay, first off, I want this to be done from MIA's perspective

- We trade for another O'Neal, I can re-wear my jerseys
- We get rid of BANKS' UGLY CONTRACT, IF IT WERENT FOR HIM IN THE DEAL, THIS OWULD BE A NO FROM MIAMI
- WE GET Rid of someone who gets paid 17m and missess 3 lay-ups per game
- We receive a huge expiring in that 2010 era, where we can sign Bosh or Amare or even LBJ while having the power to re-sign Wade

get er done riles!

Looks like it's happened. Gonna be announced later today:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3905146

To Miami: Jermaine O'Neal and Jamario Moon
To Toronto: Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks

The main difference from the original speculated trade is the inclusion of Jamario Moon.

Watch Jamario Moon start blowing up on fastbreaks and attacking the basket. That's actually a good trade, but sad to see Marion go which his contract is too crazy to bare if he had it cut down.

Like wow....This is a good trade for both teams. Toronto's Calderon-Bosh tandem is sort of like Phoenix's Nash-Amar'e one. Hopefully Marion can fit in quickly. Moon will start in Miami, and Jermaine is Jermaine, so play-off runs anyone?

I've read a couple of Heat posters at another forum rave about Moon's ability to attack the basket. Clearly they haven't seen the guy play.

Marion's prob won't be solved with caldy, because he sits out one game and plays the next game. I'm not saying that calderon rests after playing a game, I am just saying calderon is not like nash - he is injury prone.

Moon definitely was a bonus. I wouldn't have liked straight O'neal and Marion trade but pick and Moon and you get rid of Banks? Now that's a good deal.

Its_asdf wrote:I've read a couple of Heat posters at another forum rave about Moon's ability to attack the basket. Clearly they haven't seen the guy play.

Indeed. I think he can play at a higher level as a Heat. I could be wrong, but I think he is underrated by many in this trade.

yeah, i agree with you! but, even if he won't, we got 23mln cap space in 2010 + 4 mln trade exeption + 1-st rounder this year + may be 2-d rounder (that was all said by Riley in his pressconf. ) so we got A LOT of +++ and RIley is a wizzard! greatest move by him!

That sucks for Toronto. They just got JO and now they get rid of him. Big inconsistency. They've changed the coach, now the big star. Too bad, since I had hopes in summer for this season. IMHO, they should have kept Garbaroja. I have a feeling that Marion wouldnt last more than a year.
