AP Source: 76ers send Carney, top pick to 'Wolves

PHILADELPHIA -- The 76ers are close to trading forward Rodney Carney and a future No. 1 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal that clears salary cap space for Philadelphia to make a stronger push for free agents, a person in the NBA told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not yet been completed and the NBA trade moratorium is not lifted until Wednesday.

The 76ers will throw in reserve forward Calvin Booth, but are working out the particulars of what they will get back from Minnesota.

A proposed trade between the teams was first reported by Yahoo.com.

The deal clears the way for the Sixers to potentially offer a nearly $14 million starting salary and a long-term deal to free agents like forwards Elton Brand or Josh Smith. The emerging Sixers now have another $2 million in salary cap space to add to the $11 million in space available that they hope will land them the post player they badly need to become contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Probably not No.1 pick, just 1st round pick, I kinda like this deal, clears up cap space for us, although sad to see Carney leave, but he wasn´t getting much minutes anyway. Comon´ Brand!

I like this deal for the Wolves, Carney looks like he could be a valuable reserve for a very long while. They're still in need of some point guards, but they've added some nice pieces this offseason.

(Suggestion for rdelizo34: When you post these "articles" it might be best to put what they're about in the title, not just "article on Sixers and Wolves" or "article on Andrew Bynum" which doesn't invite all those people who don't bother to read threads.)

Sad to see Carney go but if Sixers land Brand and he stays healty, then it was worth it.

Sounds like a terrible deal for Minnesota.

Why is that? :? They get a small expiring conract, young swingplayer and 1st round pick for nothing.

Oh, my fault. I read that wrong. I didn't realize that the players involved only added up to 2mil. I thought it was going to damage Minnesota's cap.
