Larry Brown resigns as Sixers' VP

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Larry Brown wants one more stop on his nomadic coaching career.

Brown resigned as Philadelphia’s executive vice president Thursday with the intent to pursue a coaching job at the NBA or college level.

Brown has been a winner at almost every team from the ABA to the NBA to the college ranks, yet hasn’t coached since a bitter split with the Knicks and then-team president Isiah Thomas after one dismal season in New York in 2005-06.

“He has the taste of coaching back in his mouth,” said Brown’s agent, Joe Glass. “It would be refreshing to have a situation going that he could enjoy, rather than the last one, to say the least.”

Glass said Brown, who won an NBA title with Detroit and a college title with Kansas, would not rule out returning to either level.

I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. Let the speculation begin.

No doubt he'll be linked to every NBA team currently looking for a coach or likely to be looking to make a change in the near future. His name will probably come up for the Bulls' vacancy (if only in wild rumours) but that wouldn't be a good fit at all. Whether they keep most of the current core or blow it all up, they'll likely remain a young team which doesn't suit Brown at all. I doubt he'd be looking for a project, anyway.

Maybe he'll coach Dallas should Avery get fired after the Mavs lose again.

Rumours point to that happening so it's a possibility. The Mavericks certainly have the age and experience to appeal to Larry Brown.

i think the mavs had thier chance and now its done, going there too coach will only prove both he and the team are overrated

How bout a reunion with detroit??

Im thinking of Dllas, and Miami, Pat Riley is on verge of stepping down and remember this: he is a sneaky guy like a mouse, last january, he said "We will not trade Shaq" ahem excuse me what happened?

Or in Memphis, imagine if they get beasley, beasley/gay/conley/miller/fa, young team to coach...

Or even Chicago, I bet Carlisle is more likely tho.

Chicago isn't a great fit though. No matter how many core players they end up keeping, they're going to be a young team that's looking to renovate/rebuild. That kind of situation doesn't seem ideal for Larry Brown.

That's why I'm kind of surprised that Charlotte is being mentioned as a likely destination. Admittedly the average age of the Bobcats' roster is 26.991 (only the 13th youngest in the league), there's eight players who have at least three years of experience (five with five years or more) and six players have seen action in the Playoffs so it's not a team completely lacking in substantial NBA experience but I would have thought he'd be more interested in waiting for a vacancy to open up on a Playoff team.

Then again, it might just come down to the strong North Carolina connection, not only being in the same state as his alma mater but in particular Michael Jordan being a former Tar Heel and infamously favouring fellow alumni.

You are aware of Larry Brown's ability to help cellar dwellers, right?

Certainly, I'd just be surprised if a team like Chicago in its current state of disarray would appeal to Larry Brown at this point. Not being in the same mess, Charlotte would seem a more likely choice but I would have thought he'd be more interested in possibly coaching a playoff team if/when a vacancy opens up, given he's not one to stay with one team for a long time and he'll be 68 in September.

Given the current state of the East, he could get Charlotte into the playoffs with the current team next season easily. I wonder how Jordan and Brown would co exist though if they have a difference of opinion on a certain player. It'd be interesting...

He probably could, assuming the Bobcats stay healthy. They've had terrible luck with that the past few years.
