Tonight, MJ's number/jersey was retired in the AmericanAirlines Arena. They broadcast all Washington games here so I watch all of them most of the time. The jersey is half Bulls and Wizards combined together, looks real nice. This has never happened before with a team retiring a player who didn't even play with their team. I'm just letting you guys know in advance about this since they'll probably show it in the highlights tomorrow. Since Miami did this, Washington definitely has to retire MJ's jersey (it would only be appropriate).
A nice gesture, but a strange one nevertheless. I don't think every team should (or will) retire #23 - although that would be the ultimate sign of respect, it's not necessary.
Plus is the only team who has in their roof a retired jersey from a different team, I think it's not just a way of respect but also a way to make him look stupid, . The side of the 2 (retirements) was on the bulls side and the 3 (last one hopefully) was on the Wiz side, well done tho.
But he actually meant something to the franchise itself.
Hmm I never said Zo wasn't more important to the Heat franchise. All I said was it will be there soon enough meaning as soon as he retires which will probably be soon.
As far as the Miami Heat, they obviously felt that he did do alot for their franchise, thats why they retired the greatest of all time's jersey.
Yeah, that was definitely a nice gesture! Thumbs up for Pat Riley!
As for the NBA retiring #23? Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to recognize MJ for his contributions to the game, but ...I'm not sure that will happen. The NBA would have to consider the current players using that number as well. Lebron James won't be able to use that number in the future.
It was different when Gretzky's #99 was retired by the NHL...nobody has ever used that number before.
Hey now thats a good idea! And while we're at it lets change the "N" in NBA to M for Michael
Nah I still don't see any harm to any team retiring his jersey. It's their choice. It's not like they put a statue out the front of him or nothing... wait theres another idea
The Cavs should have unveiled a statue of "The Shot" from the 1989 Playoffs, though that would probably be pretty demoralising for the team. Then again, so is their 2002/2003 season.
this retiring jersey stuff will become an issue in couple of decades u'll have to choose between 84 and 72, not that bad if u like NFL...plus if any guy would like to wear a specific # to honor a past star they won't be able to.
I think it's ok to have it hang up there but also should be allowed for a current team member to wear that number.
I believe if the NBA changes the "N" for "M", it won't stand for Michael but for Morons, Morons Basketball Association, I think it sounds good, especially when the principal Moron is the Commissioner of the league.
i wish the knicks would trade for carlos boozer and ricky davis
YOU LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!! LOL
i cant help it, a love the knicks but would trade anyone to get these players.
