2017 Awards Winners: DPOY, COY, MIP, ROY,

Postby NovU on Tue Jun 27, 2017 3:40 pm

Defensive Player of the Year: Draymond Green

Coach of the Year: Mike D'Antoni

Most Improved Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Rookie of the Year: Malcolm Brogdon

I am thinking the Lakers and Knicks fans don't like CoY pick all that much.
Emergence of Giannis has been amazing. Great #15 pick turning out to be a franchise player.
Another player from the Bucks won the award, Rookie of the Year. A second round pick winning this I don't think is usual. Seems like the Bucks are pretty good at talent scouting.

Correct, he's the first second round Draftee to win the award, which also makes him the lowest selected player to win it. Mark Jackson previously held that distinction, being the 18th pick of the Knicks back in 1987. Together, they're the only two non-lottery picks to be named Rookie of the Year.

Sensible and worthy selections all around, really. Mike D'Antoni is probably the most controversial of the lot, but his plan of putting Harden at point guard seemed to pay off and the Rockets won a lot of games, so credit where it's due.

Thought Mike D'Antoni was well deserved, his offense is the lone reason why Harden's even in the MVP conversation, let alone finalist, this season. Same with Eric Gordon getting Sixth Man. I reckon most controversial has got to be Joel Embiid being a finalist despite technically not qualifying for the award entirely (31/82 games played, 50 is the minimum for qualification).

No real surprises from me, although I think Dario would have had my vote for ROY, but Brogdon is also a worthy candidate. I can't help but feel while statistically the rookie class as a whole was pretty sub-par, there are a lot of players that I think have great potential (Ingram, Murray, Brown, Maker, Sabonis, etc.)

Pretty wack draft class if a second rounder is ROY lol. Especially when embiid isn't truly a rookie

It wasn't the strongest rookie class, no doubt about that.

On the subject of Brogdon, is 10.2 points per game among the lowest point averages for a ROY winner? Seems awfully low for someone to win the accolade.

Seems like impact making rookies are becoming rare and rare. Perhaps young players aren't coming into the league NOT NBA ready? Or perhaps it takes more training to be NBA ready these days?

Looked it up on B-R, it is indeed the lowest for a ROY. Last time anyone was that close to averaging single digit points per game as a ROY was in 1952-53.

To be fair, the consensus #1 Simmons played for the 76ers who are in no rush to win any games. He most certainly would've won it and will probably win next year

I don't think that's the case. Doing a brief look at the draft classes of the past decade or so, most draft classes usually have one or two stand out players in contention for ROY. Some classes are weaker than others, but for the most part that tends to be the typical trend of rookies in the NBA.

Agreed. It was just one of those years, in this case a particularly egregious example. It might've been different if Simmons hadn't missed the year, and ended up living up to even half of the expectations.

Or even if Brandon Ingram lived up to half of his expectations.
