Will Derrick Rose be the first MVP to not make it to the hall of fame?

I borrowed this idea from other forum but it's a fun topic to get discussions going. Thread makers, please step up!
If Rose continues to play the way he is, I don't believe he will make the HOF.

Perhaps, if Butler and cos can carry him to win a ring then he might have a shot? But even then that wouldn't be possible unless he ups his level of performance.

It's possible. The thing is, he hasn't been playing too badly, as far as his decision making, shot selection, and so forth. Once the double vision clears up completely, and the shots are falling more often, those numbers will creep back up. As it stands, he's also doing a decent job finding teammates for assists.

But as far as making the Hall of Fame...absolutely, he'll have to lift his game, and sustain it to have a really good shot, and be deserving of the nod. It's not impossible, but it's yet to be seen. One might point towards Bill Walton's injury-plagued career, but he did have a standout college career, and led to the Portland Trail Blazers to their only championship; a little more than Rose has done.

For what it's worth, I think those poll options present something of a false dichotomy. He may not have a Hall of Fame career, but if he stays healthy and makes a solid contribution from here on out, it's not a complete disappointment, either. One might also draw comparisons with Grant Hill here.

A for effort but i don't think it's a big debate. It would be an answer to a good trivia question. Rose is not HOF bound

The timing of raising this question is peculiar since he still hasn't played closed to a full season and or at an all star type level.

I'd love to hear the Rose fan boys make a case though

He might be undeserving with the MVP but saying he's not an all-star on that season (or prior to that) is a bit harsh... On the topic, if they will consider Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, or perhaps T-Mac in it he should be also but until then it's a no no.

Sorry, on first read I got the impression that you don't consider Rose an all-star all of his career... carry on.

Rose is playing in a generation full of great pg's. It's definitely a uphill battle for him to distinguish himself from the group, despite his early success on

Part of me feels it was too early for Rose and Curry to receive MVP awards. Their team record played a heavy hand, and the league probably wanted this as they like to promote/advertise their next superstar with awards. Rose now needs Bill Walton treatment to enter HOF(which I think was possible if he retired 2 seasons ago) and even his MVP season came with a lot of controversy. This now may further backfire as the Warriors actually seem to be entering dynasty mode. How many of MVP awards will Curry deserve over next few years. Is there anyone to even contend especially in this era where team record matters significantly.

What do you mean "Bill Walton treatment"? Does being one of the greatest college player ever and having 2 NBA rings somewhat make his HOF selection questionable to you?

Interestingly, Cedric Maxwell is the only Finals MVP to not make the Hall. I could see Iguodala and Billups getting passed over.

I think Billups will eventually make it the the HOF with repeated nominations for a few years.

Technically he's already in there as a member of the Dream Team. I don't think there'll be any further inductions for him, though.

good catch there. Lattner was probably the best college i saw play. i sure didn't like him but he was a badass in college. the espn 30 for 30 on him is one of my favs

Allen Iverson is the only NBA MVP to not be inducted in the HOF. Same will go with Derrick Rose.

Iverson, along with the other former MVPs who are not in the Hall of Fame - Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Nash, and the still active Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry - aren't eligible. All have careers that make them locks, or well on the way to being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Not very similar to Derrick Rose's situation at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if Iverson takes multiple ballots to get in. Especially with a wave of better guys over the next few years and the now shorter wait time. (Like, we can now pencil Kobe in for four years from the end of this season. We'll probably know about KG/Dirk/Duncan in the next year or two.)

EDIT: Oh, he'll be eligible in 2017 or 2018. So he might have a better shot after all. I wonder if Webber ever gets in.

From memory, Dominique Wilkins didn't get in first ballot, so it wouldn't be completely surprising if Iverson still doesn't go in first time. The quotas don't help matters; with the backlog of players who are worthy of the nod and have been waiting years, you'd think they'd make exceptions to those quotas so that players who should be first ballot do indeed go in first ballot.

I think AI deserves it in his first go. Impact he's made during his time was much bigger than most legit players that were actually better anyway. Reason that can be used to argue for or against I guess.

He wasn't the most efficient player, but nevertheless a very talented one, who was around for more than a decade and a very significant player in his prime. I think any player that fits the latter description is a strong candidate for first ballot.
