OAKLAND, Calif. -- Luke Walton has more NBA Coach of the Month awards than official wins.

The Golden State Warriors interim coach was named the top coach in the Western Conference for October and November on Tuesday after leading the team to a record 19-0 start in place of the injured Steve Kerr.

While the NBA issued a statement earlier in the day reiterating that Kerr remains the head coach of record for Golden State, the league said Walton was eligible for the monthly award.

At least that goes on his record rather than Steve Kerr's.

when a team doesn't lose in a month, does the coach always win the award?

I imagine it'd be hard to give it to someone else.

Kudos to Luke Walton though. Interim coach is still a coach and he led the cohesive unit successfully to a 20-0 record. You can't argue against the result.

In the meantime, Curry continues to tear apart, 8 threes on 11 attempts, 18 shots overall that led to 40 ass whooping points. Did anyone notice he hasn't had not even a single bad game this year? What you could argue his worst game of the year would still beat Kobe's best game so far. In short, people need to start paying more attention, we could be witnessing what could arguably be the best single season performance in terms of offense and relative efficiency.

So far, every undefeated team in a month (that I can tell) has had their coach win the Coach of the Month except Bill Sharman on the 1971-72 Lakers. Even Phil Jackson wasn't snubbed.

Because there was no Coach of the Month award.

The Hawks last year notably had their starting five win the Player of the Month award during their unbeaten month.

Did Spoelstra in 2013 and Rick Adelman in 2008 win the awards when they had their winning streaks?

Might not be relevant but I read somewhere that it's less about playbook but it's more about putting right guys on the floor together. More than half the team in the league puts wrong units on the floor for too long which hurts their chance at winning the games. It is basically the ultimate argument why who is coaching matters little but it's just vastly more about putting cohesive players on the floor and letting them play their game.

Of course the guy that hasn't been involved with the team for two seasons deserves credit for their current success. Not the guy who guided them to the championship last year, or the guy who's presently filling in for them.

Should have given the Eastern Conference award to Brett Brown so they could have two winless winners. He is doing everything possible to fulfill the front office's expectations after all!
