Pistons nearing deal to acquire Brandon Jennings

Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:26 am

The Detroit Pistons are nearing an agreement to acquire Brandon Jennings in a sign-and-trade deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Pistons are finalizing a three-year, $24 million contract with Jennings, sources told Y! Sports.
Jennings, 23, averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 assists in 80 games for the Bucks last season. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft and spent his first fours seasons with the Bucks.
Jennings is the Pistons' second big free-agent acquisition of the summer. They earlier signed former Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith to a four-year, $54 million contract. Longtime Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups also has returned to Detroit on a two-year contract.

Yet another shoot-happy guard for the Pistons, but at least he's way more talented than the other ones...8m a year ain't too bad either.

Should have given up Stuckey instead of Knight.

If he's willing to listen, learn and refine his game, he'll at least have a pretty good mentor in Chauncey Billups.

I hope you're right and Maurice Cheeks/Chauncey Billups get the best out of him.

Mo Cheeks did well in developing Westbrook.

2 shoot-happy players on the same team. So who's gonna get the ball more? :P

Another ingenious move by Dumars. Andre Drummond now can watch and learn from Jennings (& Josh ofc) how things are done at superstar level.

Continuing the saga of doing something for doing something's sake.

SLAVA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

yea, i was a little miffed to see Slava and Middleton go, actually. they have potential to be good role players.

i think BJ is a nice upgrade from BK, but it wasn't necessary. i also don't think he'll be as bad as people think he will. he became the shoot-first hog when the Bucks didnt have anybody else good (before Monta came in), so hopefully he'll adjust his game now that he has 3 perfectly apt players to pass to now.

also, can we start calling BJ-Smoove-Moose-Dre the Four Pistons of the Apocalypse?

Josh Smith and Jennings both are projects. The Pistons are paying huge money on their potentials. Jenning at 8 mil a season for 3 years, I don't think is too bad. But couple that with Josh's 56 mil contract for 4 years, it's a huge gamble imo.

Monroe and Drummond are amazing. Let's hope Josh and Jenning's me-first basketball doesn't end up hurting their growth.

I think at this stage of his career, Josh Smith is well beyond being a project. In Smith, the Pistons are getting a borderline All-Star with some concerning key flaws. Jennings may also be a little past the "project" stage at this point, but I'd say he still has more untapped potential than Smith.

I agree in that sense. I guess 'project' is too big of a term to be used for players who's been around for so long. What I meant though was potential to redefine their games to be more efficient and error free. Their flaws are concerning but I can see the payout being great if Josh and Jennings smarten up and management does a nice job coaching them.

I'm not too high on the Pistons currently but this certainly is an interesting mix of talent.

This could work better than you think. It was a smart deal.

Of course, it's also INSANE.

Three freak-athlete big men (Andre Drummond, Josh Smith, Greg Monroe) who can't shoot, a point guard who shoots too much (and still can't shoot), a bench full of wild cards, Will Bynum and Rodney Stuckey ... How is this really a team?

Everything about this Pistons squad and the way Joe Dumars built it has been a giant middle finger to everyone. Nobody would take a chance on Andre Drummond in the 2012 draft? The Pistons grabbed him. Nobody wanted to commit big money to Josh Smith? The Pistons swooped in and stole him for $54 million. Chauncey Billups is washed up? Chauncey Billups is coming back to Detroit. Tony Mitchell? Freak athlete/tweener who plummeted in the draft. BOOM. Pistons. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope? Well ... nobody has any clue what he'll end up doing. But, hey, Pistons.

Throw in Jennings, and COACH SHEED, and the Pistons are basically just stockpiling guys who have driven the whole world crazy. Now they'll drive the world crazy together. It's League Pass Christmas!

dammit, that's perfect.

might need to save that image for appropriate times during the season when Josh/BJ take ill-advised shots. :(
