J-Will?

While looking through some stats earlier I noticed some interesting things concerning Jason Williams. He was traded from Sacramento due to his erratic style and poor shot selection aswell as percentage. However if you examine his stats from his last year in Sacramento he had career year turnover wise and posted a career best field goal percentage. An interesting contrast is the situation of Jason Kidd who was traded to the Nets last season and considered their saviour. He did so while shooting a horrible 39% as well as posting a mark of 3.49 To's PG. Both these numbers are worse than Williams' 41% from the field and 2.06 TO's PG. Granted Williams played 7 minutes less per game than Kidd in the seasons in question however 7 minutes shouldn't excuse the almost double turnovers per game that Kidd posted. Kidd does possess a slightly higher assist to turnover ratio and average more points per game but I just thought that it was interesting that J-Will is considered so eratic and Kidd isn't. Furthermore, Williams' assist numbers were also lower due to the system they use in Sacramento (even Bibby posts low assist numbers). Any thoughts?

J-Will's reputation comes from the times that he would always attempt a fancy pass rather than a fundamental pass, in a situation where showmanship was not as important as finishing the play (such as an important playoff game). He would also take ill-advised threes from way behind the line, some of which he made, many he missed, while his teammates were in better position for more high percentage shots. Basically it's just his game which produces some nice highlights when everything is working, and causes turnovers when things don't click.

Jason Kidd, despite the poorer shooting percentages, is seen as being better as he is more fundamentally sound, a good leader, and has better statistical output in other areas. He has been able to fit in well with three teams during his career (his Dallas tenure is questionable, but then again there were a lot of chemistry problems on that team, mostly with the other two Js), so he has the reputation of being a team player.

i think some people may be surprised when they see the assist/turnover ratios for all the PG's.

kidd's been shooting the ball fairly well compared to last year. heck, he's having a great year. despite his great talent and his ability to make teammates better, he's been traded 3 times already! i know there were outside factors that figured in him moving to new teams, but isn't it strange that this all nba guard has been on 3 different teams?

It's not unprecedented though. Julius Erving played for a few teams during his ABA/NBA career. Wilt Chamberlain was traded twice, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was traded by the Bucks.

That's true about Erving, and I'm pretty sure both Wilt and Kareem requested their trades...and as much as Suns management denied it, I think it's safe to say Jason Kidd's domestic problems bought him a ticket out of Phoenix.

Charles Barkley and Dominique Wilkins are two other examples of All-Stars who were traded while they were still All-Star calibre players.

the sixers were actually going to trade erving a few years before he retired, but they got a lot of fans criticizing it and decided not to do it, kidd's situation is a little different because his trades were always because of some kind of personal issue, not his play on the court.
