Good move by the Mavericks. Odom's head and heart clearly aren't in the game this year and it just wasn't working out, so cutting their losses and granting him a leave of absence seems like the right way to go. They've also retained the ability to trade him in the offseason, if that's at all possible at this point. Mind you, considering he's an expiring contract next season, they could perhaps deal him at the Draft to a team willing to give up a pick for future cap relief and the chance he might return to form.
As far as Odom is concerned, I wouldn't judge him too harshly. He's had a rough year with the loss of his cousin and his father's health problems, on top of the vetoed Chris Paul trade and subsequent trade to the Mavericks. Unfortunately for Odom and the Mavs, it's all come to a head at once meaning a situation that could have been mutually beneficial hasn't gone at all to plan. Hopefully for his sake, and whichever team he ends up with next season - assuming he doesn't just retire - this leave of absence will be just what he needs.
