The Lamar Odom Saga Ends

Postby Mavs4Life on Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:40 am

Lamar Odom's brief and bumpy ride with the Dallas Mavericks has come to an abrupt end.

The Mavericks and Odom spent Easter Sunday working out a parting, according to sources close to the situation, that frees the struggling Odom to leave the team immediately without actually being released.

He will be on IR instead of being released, but his drama will now go to another team.

Good move by the Mavericks. Odom's head and heart clearly aren't in the game this year and it just wasn't working out, so cutting their losses and granting him a leave of absence seems like the right way to go. They've also retained the ability to trade him in the offseason, if that's at all possible at this point. Mind you, considering he's an expiring contract next season, they could perhaps deal him at the Draft to a team willing to give up a pick for future cap relief and the chance he might return to form.

As far as Odom is concerned, I wouldn't judge him too harshly. He's had a rough year with the loss of his cousin and his father's health problems, on top of the vetoed Chris Paul trade and subsequent trade to the Mavericks. Unfortunately for Odom and the Mavs, it's all come to a head at once meaning a situation that could have been mutually beneficial hasn't gone at all to plan. Hopefully for his sake, and whichever team he ends up with next season - assuming he doesn't just retire - this leave of absence will be just what he needs.

He was just awful as a Maverick. No excuse but he simply stunk. Wonder how he'll pick it up next season though his age is going to be a concern from now on.

I agree with you on some degree.Amare Stoudemire's brother died in a car crash but it seemed before his back injury that he put it to the side during gameplay.Odom needs to get over this "Feel sorry for me" attitude.

I think that's a fair call. While I do sympathise with him, he also had professional obligations and as such it's not completely unfair to say that he let the Mavericks down. Basketball could have afforded him a welcome distraction from some of the things happening in his personal life, a means of escape and an outlet to do something positive at a time when he's dealing with a lot of negative stuff.

Of course, it's easy for me to say that, having not gone through what he's going through. It's probably what he's tried to do but it just didn't work out, so it's probably best for everyone that he takes a break from basketball for the moment.
