Warriors' Fans BOO Their Own Owner

Postby CheddahCheese on Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:16 pm

It was supposed to be a special night for Golden State Warriors legend Chris Mullin, as the team honored him with a jersey retirement ceremony for his #17, but when the owner Joe Lacob came out to address, this happened:

How awkward is this? 18k people booing you while you're standing in the center and talking. Apparently the fans were not happy about the Monta Ellis trade. Monta was a fan favorite. Can't blame the fans, really. The trade was retarded.

What a bunch of dicks. Even Clippers fans aren't that way, I think.
Rick Barry should be booed though, he's a dick.

Their discontent is understandable and it's their right to boo and feel that way, but given the circumstances I'd say it was the wrong time to voice that displeasure. It was Chris Mullin's moment, it should've all been about honouring and cheering for him rather than heaping scorn on Joe Lacob.

I thought what Mullin did was very classy though. Rick Barry on the other hand was pretty tactless, he should've just left it alone as he didn't help the situation.

+1 all the way, drew.

Anyways, imo the Warriors are better off without Ellis. They got a few promising young talents that might turn into stars in next two years or so, and also have solid veterans. They weren't gonna get anywhere with Ellis as a centerpiece, and I believe they should be just as good without him next year if not better, when everyone's healthy. Perhaps a fringe playoffs team if things go in the right direction.

Nice of Mullins to step in. Rick just came off as a grouchy old neighbor, even though I do agree with him.

Pretty bad of the fans to do that when they're supposed to be honoring a great player.

The Warrior fans have a right to express their opinion but this was not the right time. The only thing this did was make them look bad. This night was about Mullin but instead of the fans praising him, he had to defend Lacob.

Besides, they weren't going anywhere with Ellis. They had him 7 years I think and only made the playoffs once. I understand them being a little upset with losing their best player but this wasn't necessary.

It was just dumb of Joe Lacob to pick up the mic. He ruined Mullin's night.

It makes sense that he'd be out there hosting the ceremony; being the owner of the team that's honouring a former player he's naturally going to be a part of the festivities, thanking him for his contributions on behalf of the organisation and whatnot. The fans are ultimately the ones that spoiled the night by choosing an inappropriate time to let Lacob have it. Given the occasion, the appropriate thing to do would've been to just put that aside for a moment and cheer for Mullin.

Again, I understand the sentiment, but it was the wrong moment to express it.

Add three more lines and this could be a nice limerick...

How about...

It makes one feel totally sick
To see fans act like such dicks
But we'll make one exception
For a hostile reception
Rick Barry; the man is a prick
