Dwight Howard gets third straight DPOY

Fri Apr 22, 2011 3:07 am

I figured we should probably have separate threads for each of the 2011 awards so that we can discuss the winners and discuss who we think should have won if our personal picks differ from the actual winner. Predictions can be tracked in the previous thread.

Howard gets third straight Kia Defensive Player of Year nod

Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic is the recipient of the 2010-11 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, the NBA announced today. Howard becomes the first player to earn the honor three straight seasons; only Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace, with four each, have won the award more times.

The 6-foot-11 center led the league with 66 double-doubles, including six 20-point/20-rebound efforts, while ranking second in rebounds (14.1 rpg) and fourth in blocks (2.38 bpg). With Howard manning the middle, the Magic allowed 93.5 ppg, ranking fourth in that category.

No complaints here, though I'm surprised that three Bulls received votes and that Keith Bogans got a first place vote. Anyway, I've actually been impressed with Howard's offense this season as his work with The Dream really seems to have paid off but the focus on his offensive game certainly hasn't appeared to hurt his dedication to defense.
