All future dunk contest participants should be given a memo not to do dunks made by Dr. J if he is a judge since he'll probably be playa hating again if they pull the dunk off.

I think actually Erving gave Ibaka a 10 on that dunk.

It was a contest where most of the dunks were worth seeing again and again. If i had to choose a Top 5 it would be this despite all being close to me.
1 DeMar's showstopper-Blake's honey dip(just equally wow. Both gave me some retro like chills!!)
2 Blake's 360(despite not making it as he would liked, his speed and jump made it look astonishing!)
3 McGee's two rim (his extension is amazing)
4 Ibaka's free throw line dunk. A dunk worthy of a final round(I think that Ibaka was sure he won't get through so he pulled the trigger and risked with his best dunks)
5 McGee's rock the cradle reverse(his height is the reason it is higher in my list. It was amazing but it looked like he didn't even try for it!!)

As for the dunk over the hood. It was all about presentation. Kenny Smith tried to bring the show in. He overacted ,bring out a choir singing "i believe i can fly" and it was a really fun and pleasant view despite i won't vote for it,unless he dunked over the roof. He could use a lower car,we won't criticize him for it! But gave me a nice laugh

As a bottom line, the NBA clearly wanted to bring the show back to one of the flagships of the weekend. The mentors, the new ideas were successful and gave us a great contest. Miles better than last year. Bring more contestants ,and get rid of the useless fan voting, and we're going to be even better!

I'm still a little surprised by the negative reactions to Griffin's final dunk. I get that it's been done better with people jumping over the roof and I certainly agree that the choir was overkill as far as pomp and circumstance is concerned, but clearing the hood of the car from about the dotted line isn't exactly easy or mundane in its own right.

if a random streetballer catches the hood of the car with his feet and eats shit, nobody cares but his family. if blake does the same, there is a lot of money & time to be lost if he gets hurt

Agreed. It might not have been the difficulty but the psychological difficulty of it. If you screw up jumping over a car, it's not going to be pretty. You screw up jumping over somebody, that person you jump over gets nailed, not really you.

I can't really argue strongly for any of the other 3 being clear cut winners due to the fact they didn't make their dunks first time. When they do that, that's what impresses me (Y)

As I've said before, it's no Iguodala getting robbed by Nate Robinson. And when all is said & done, it's a Dunk Contest whether there is a subjective nature. It's not a 3 point contest where most balls wins :P

We, at home, do have video to watch over and over again but the judges give scores on the spur of the moment and obviously the atmosphere is going to draw the highest points. That's why McGee even said that once Baron and the car rolled in, he knew he was gonna lose!

Gotta love the showmanship of a Los Angeles player, and the political answer of McGee admitting he thought it was over.

college contest on thursday with that 5' 11" youtube guy. i hope he does his 360 through the legs dunk. supposedly he's gonna do some dunks not in his video and dunks "no one's ever seen before". that phrase is thrown around pretty liberally nowadays (like it was with the Blake car dunk, which i have heard street ballers do before. though the mcgee 3 balls or 2 hoops ones were truly new dunks)

Looks like it was a pretty good contest. Austin Rivers' tribute to his father was cool, though I'm not sure Doc ever threw it down like that.

Last "real" dunk contest of the year tonight

NCAA Dunk Contest, 9pm EST ESPN2

~1hr 15min

Pretty good contest, few misses but I think they have a 30 second window to dunk so that kept the pace up. That YouTube kid had a lot of potential but missed a few big dunks, too bad since this is the last we will see of him unless he joins TFB or something. He ended up winning

The honey dip off the windmill was just...wow. Getting back to the NBA contest for a moment, I thought Griffin's honey dip off the backboard was his best dunk and the best dunk of the contest. I could see that being the new variation on old dunks to freshen them up and take them to a new level. Awesome stuff from Jacob Tucker.
