Tyreke Evans named ROY

Postby Andrew on Fri Apr 30, 2010 10:27 am

Proof or ban? Proof.

Evans capped his fabulous rookie year for the Sacramento Kings by beating out Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings for the coveted award.

Evans became the fourth rookie ever to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game, joining Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James in an exclusive club.

Evans was the only rookie to appear on all 123 ballots from a media panel, getting 67 first-place votes and 491 total points. Curry was second with 43 first-place votes and 391 points, with Jennings getting 12 first-place votes and 204 points. Players were awarded five points for a first-place vote, three for a second and one for a third.

The right choice, though the voting was a little closer than I thought it might be. I also thought some of the residual hype for Jennings after the early weeks of the season might see him split more votes with Curry but clearly that wasn't the case.

Tyreke, Brandon, and Stephen, all three have played great.

Especially, Brandon I believe was under pressure after making a comment on Rubio, which bought lots of negative attentions at that time. I bet that he turned some of those non believers into his fans. Now Rubio needs to come to the NBA, and prove Brandon wrong. That, I can't wait to see...

IMO, I would have voted for a Co-ROY, Evans and Curry.

Why? Not to sound like an ass, I'm just curious. A lot of people have said that, but I really don't see the logic; Team Tyreke had the better stats (basic simple folk stats, I don't know about benji style stats) and their team's records were almost equal with GSW winning one more meaningless game.

Tyreke contributes more wins (wins shares, WS in the Advanced tab) and more effective (PER) compared to the two.

Not to mention Curry's numbers are inflated by Nelson's up-tempo joke of a system. I don't really like 'Reke, and I think Jennings will be the better in the long run, but he definitely deserves it. Far and away the most effective rook.

Evans deserves it, Jennings should have been second though. It seems any random D-League scrub can come in and average 12+ at Golden State.

Yeah, Jae is right. Evans deserves it because he led the team himself. Curry? Ah, he played great with a lot of guy like Ellis, Maggette etc. (Warriors had A LOT OF injuries). Jennings can became second, because he led the team with 2-3 guys, less than Curry.

Watching Curry a few times this season, I thought he was actually great. His stats came playing behind scorers like Maggette and Ellis who are great scorers. Having to earn shares of ball usage from them, and effectiveness while he was using it, it's safe to say that he had a stellar rookie season. Up tempo system might have benefited him in ways, but I think his numbers would have been even better if was the 1st option on some other team, which could have earned him ROY title.

I'm not trying to take anything away from what Jennings or Evans achieved, but Reke pretty much was the first option on the team all season long(and he was great), Jennings on the other hand, settled to become a third option during the season, behind Bogun and Salmons. For Jennings, it could have been worse if Redd was healthy. Watching Jennings in the playoffs however, I can see that he is one heck of a rookie though.

None of the rookies had a stellar rookie season.

Reggie Williams is a good scorer though. He was a stud scoring star in VMI's high octane offence in college :P

Yeah, 20-5-5 was impressive, but I'd still have taken Jennings. :D

Maybe it's just the way I read this, but are you saying GSW has a better supporting cast than Milwaukee? Bogut, Ridnour, and John Salmons disagree with you.

I guess Jennings and Curry were more inmpressive than tyreke, but less consistent. Jennings with his in-yo-face threes and 50+ pts and Curry playing nearly complete games in a run'n gun system and triple doubles

Fixed and I don't call them in-yo-face threes, I call them bad shot attempts.

Indeed, I havent seen much of Brandon Jennings, but the couple of games that I saw of Tyreke Evans...the guy does not play like a rookie. He seems like a 2-3 year old player in the league.

Curry is a pretty good player too, from the way he played the 2-3 games I saw of him, I'd say I'd pick him over Monta Ellis.

Agreed. It's not that Jennings and Curry are terrible players and shouldn't be in the conversation, but Evans has been more consistent and seemingly a more polished player with very respectable numbers, so it's well-earned.
