No jail time for Arenas

Postby Andrew on Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:28 am

Full story here.

Suspended Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas was ordered Friday to spend 30 days in a halfway house for his conviction on gun charges stemming from a locker-room confrontation with a teammate.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin also sentenced Arenas to 400 hours of community service, which cannot be conducted at basketball clinics, and a $5,000 fine.

Doesn't look like the Wizards will be able to void his contract, though they were going to have a bitter fight with the players union on their hands if they did. Seems both sides are more open to Arenas remaining in Washington though so it's probably no longer an issue.

The judge should have been much harsher with him, and demanded the community service not be with PETA.

I don't think PETA activities count as community service.

If he's endorsed with them at all probably not. Be that little conflict of interest thing. Will probly consist of going into schools speaking of the dangers of guns.

I'd actually pay to see it...but then it wouldnt be service. I guess my purchased ticket will be bribing administrators to let me sit in the class...

Looking at another part of Arenas' sentence, kind of funny that his fine is a fifth of what it would cost him if he criticised the referees after a game.

What you actually want to see is his month in a halfway house. It's what everyone wants to see.
