Re: Agent Zero, Crittention - Draw guns over gambling?

Looks like Arenas has a court date set and he has a plea bargain in place so jail doesn't look likely to happen for him. I guess it's the best he could have hoped for at this stage. (Y)

Those guns are long gone. Crittenton probably ditched them the instant a police investigation started.

He could have hoped for the DA to not prosecute based on a terrible law.

But what do you expect from the banana republic that is D.C.

It'll be interesting to see what the NBA does next. Clearly the suspension was intended as a wake up call to get Arenas' attention and encourage him to tone it down and take the matter seriously, but I don't think they'll be in a hurry to reduce it.

Arenas' next team? Keep an eye on Orlando

It’s widely assumed that Gilbert Arenas will never play another game for the Washington Wizards, even if no one seems quite sure yet how soon or by what means Arenas and the Wiz will ultimately part ways.

So it’s also natural to start wondering which teams out there might be interested in Arenas when the 28-year-old is finished meeting all the sentencing requirements stemming from his felony gun-possession charge and receives his eventual clearance to return to work from NBA commissioner David Stern.

Will Arenas manage to avoid jail time when he’s sentenced March 26? Are the growing whispers true about the Wiz -- fearing they don’t have a strong enough case -- backing off the idea of trying to void Arenas’ contract? How much longer will Arenas remain suspended by the league? Can Washington realistically find a trade partner or negotiate a buyout of Arenas’ contract when it still owes him $80.2 million over the four seasons after this season?

For all the above unknowns in circulation, here’s something definitive I’ve heard from three separate folks close to the situation: Arenas would love to land with the Orlando Magic when this ordeal is over.

It remains to be seen how such a move will be accomplished. The Wizards would probably like to void his contract but they'd be foolish to give him up without any compensation when there are teams who are very much willing to snap him up should he become available.

No surprises there. Much like the Tiger Woods situation, it's just not worth the bad PR for most companies.

4yrs/80mil left on Arenas contract. Voiding that contract is compensation in itself.

True, and it seems highly likely that the Wizards do plan to rid themselves of Arenas one way or another. Tough call though, as much as you'd want to have the situation over and done with and no longer be responsible for that contract, you wouldn't want to see him go to a team like Orlando without at least getting some picks in return and then face a notorious chip-on-the-shoulder player like Arenas four times a year.

as a fan, it would suck

being free of the contract sounds more enticing then a late 1st round pick and garbage contracts

If that's all they can get for him, absolutely. In any case, it seems highly unlikely he'll play another game for them the way they're actively distancing themselves from him. Maybe it's just a short term PR move until the sentence is handed down offering some sort of resolution and plan going forward but it can't be doing anything to preserve the relationship between the team and Arenas. It's difficult to imagine him remaining with the team any longer than they have to keep him.

So Crittenton is next to plead guilty.

Sounds like he's getting off much easier than Arenas might.

NBA to suspend Arenas for rest of season

NBA commissioner David Stern will not permit Gilbert Arenas to play again for the Washington Wizards this season, league sources told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday afternoon.

Stern had been considering two suspension scenarios for the former All-Star: the remainder of this season or a full 82-game ban that would extend into next season. League sources said Stern gave Arenas the chance to take the shorter suspension if he pledged not to appeal it.

The Washington Post reported that Arenas told Stern in their meeting on Wednesday that he would ask the union not to fight the suspension. Sources said Arenas has yet to speak with union attorneys or executive director Billy Hunter regarding his decision.

The players union had held out some last-minute hope that Stern would allow Arenas to return to the NBA sooner than next season if the union would concede to amending the current Collective Bargaining Agreement to include a zero-tolerance gun policy. No formal proposal on the specifics of possible penalties for the policy was exchanged, sources say, but the union was open to the idea had the commissioner been willing to shorten the suspensions of Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton.

Crittenton is expected to receive a similar penalty to Arenas, sources said.

Not altogether surprising, I guess it just remains to be seen how the Wizards will send him packing. It also seems only fair that Crittenton will be receiving a similar suspension.

Also, from NBA.com:

NBA commissioner David Stern planned to meet with Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas on Wednesday and an announcement on the full length of Arenas' indefinite suspension could follow.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed the meeting to The Associated Press.

It was first reported by ESPN.com.

On Tuesday, Stern also met with Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton, who was sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation after pleading guilty Monday to a misdemeanor gun charge.

Arenas pleaded guilty Jan. 15 to a felony gun charge after an alleged confrontation with Crittenton in the Wizards' changing room at Verizon Center in Washington. Arenas, who is in the second season of a six-year, $111 million contract, is scheduled to be sentenced March 26.

Modifly, you posted news older than Andrew's that refers to future events that Andrew's already describes as happening.

Either way, this is stupid. If there wasn't a zero-tolerance policy in place there is no reason to be so insane with the suspension. There is no way this is comparable to attacking fans or choking your coach.
