Top Ten Worst Signings 2000-2009

Fri Aug 28, 2009 11:02 am

And yet another one from Kelly Dwyer.

1. Eddy Curry
2. Jerome James
3. Jared Jeffries
4. Larry Hughes
5. Ben Wallace (Bulls)
6. Peja Stojakovic (Hornets)
7. Erick Dampier
8. Andrei Kirilenko
9. Kenyon Martin
10. Rashard Lewis (2007, the $118 mil contract)

I pretty much agree with that list, I'd love to put the Bulls signing Ben Wallace at the top but it's hard to rank it above those first four, at least they got a decent year out of him and he's gone now. I guess in a pinch he could move into the fourth spot above Larry Hughes. The bottom three are perhaps a little iffy but given the dollar amounts I think it's a fair call. Kirilenko's signing looked a lot better at the time, as his role has diminished in Utah he hasn't had a great opportunity to prove he's worthy of his contract.

Pretty funny. Rashard Lewis like you said Andrew, is little iffy. Not the worst of kind for sure. I think there are worse ones out there.

I'd kick Damp off, it's a bad contract, but he's still extremely valuable.

In return, Jalen Rose is one I'd definitely put on there. Allan Houston signed that $100 million contract extension in 2001 and when the CBA came up again there was a rule made because of it. Sprewell got his contract in 2000. What about Ratliff's?

Haha top 3 all Isiah signings. The Damp signing is overblown, and if it weren't for Nash winning the MVP in 2005, wouldn't be on that list. D-Miles, Ratliff and LaFrentz are notable bad Blazer contracts. I think #2 and #3 should be lower since the Knicks were already bad anyway, and the MLE is far less crippling than K-Mart's travesty of a deal.

Jermaine O'neal,A.Croshere and S.Marbury should be somewhere in that list.

I forgot about Jalen Rose and Allan Houston, they could certainly bump Martin and Lewis off the list.

Dwyer gives his reasoning in the full article, which I linked to in the first post.

The top looks OK, I would remove Lewis from that list. In the Playoffs this year, he proved why he got that contract.

Rashard Lewis should be replaced with Gilbert Arenas, Rashard hasn't had any serious injuries that stopped him from contributing to his team

Agreed, Arenas' recent deal certainly hasn't looked like a good move so far. He's still got time left on the contract to redeem himself and supposedly he's looked good in workouts during the offseason but his knee has yet to be put to the test over the course of a full season and that's a huge contract to live up to.
