Michael Jordan Admits Mistakes, By Drafting Brown & Morrison

Postby Clueminati017 on Thu Feb 12, 2009 8:03 am

In a rare conference call on Tuesday, Bobcats executive Michael Jordan owned up to his mistakes, but indicated that he remains hopeful for the future.

"I think we've grown from it. I've grown from it and hopefully down the road when you make a choice, you try to make a better choice," Jordan said.

"People are going to point out the mistakes. Very rarely do they point out the successes. I understand that. It's part of the game."

Charlotte recently traded Adam Morrison, Jordan's first draft selection, to the Lakers.

"Coming off an injury last year, he seemed to have lost his confidence a little bit," Jordan said. "He didn't have the understanding of how [coach] Larry [Brown] expected him to play both offensively and defensively. And I felt like something needed to happen for Adam as well as the organization."

It's a shame he's a pretty mediocre executive after being one of the greatest ever.

Well, I don't think MJ really did that poorly with drafting Adam Morrison. I mean the guy played well in college, drafting is a hit & miss thing. you can't always tell who will make it big. Drafting Kwame Brown though, that MJ should really apologize for.

I would disagree....I thought Brandon Roy was a gimme at 3 at the time of the draft....the Bobcats had a good SF in Gerald Wallace, they had a young PG in Raymond Felton & they had PF/C Emeka Okafor....it seemed only appropriate to draft the best SG & most NBA-ready player in the draft in Brandon Roy....I say this knowing that I was & am a big fan of Morrison & his college career & still thought he should've been picked in the top 6-8 at the time....

It's difficult to defend some of Michael Jordan's decisions as an executive but I think there are a few saving graces. Morrison was a promising prospect who so far has bombed in the NBA and the selection of Kwame Brown was, to a certain extent, a product of the time. The stock of players coming out of high school was at an all-time high and Brown is a legit big man in stature if nothing else. Jordan wasn't the only executive to gamble on a high school player in that draft though I certainly won't defend it as a good pick by any stretch of the imagination.

The other saving grace for Jordan as well as Isiah Thomas to a certain extent is that for all their blunders, they didn't necessarily destroy their respective teams. Jordan hasn't lifted a franchise the way he did the Bulls during his playing career and Thomas certainly left a mess that Donnie Walsh has done a pretty amazing job of recovering from, but neither of their teams were really going anywhere fast before they came on board. Steve Kerr's moves with the Suns in comparison seem a lot more destructive for the way they've plunged a 50 win team into a battle just to stay in the top eight and could well see one of their best players dealt for far less than they should get for him.

Having said that, I certainly agree that Michael Jordan the basketball executive isn't anywhere near the level of Michael Jordan the basketball player, but in all fairness you could say the same for Elgin Baylor.

Looking at Kwame's draft, there wasn't really that much talent that year coming in to the NBA. There were quite a few decent players in that year's draft but no one who really jumped out at you at the time.

I agree... What lure Michael Jordan to Kwame Brown was his high school credentials on being the number 1 ranked player in the nation going to the NBA. He was basically a high risk overall, but the scouts also had him as a top 5 post player to get. Jordan could've easily picked up Tyson Chandler, Pau Gasol, Eddy Curry, Sagana Diop, or Eddie Griffin. That's not the only mistake he done if we want to mention Kwame Brown, Adam Morrison, but we got to through the name Sean May on that bus. He couldn't watch his weight which he was a good player back in UNC. Where I believe him drafting players from UNC was like Spurrier coaching the Redskins having nothing but the Gator Alumni on his roster. It's great that he man up on his mistakes which I wish Isaiah Thomas done it with the Knicks and the CBA he destroyed, and that goes for Danny Ainge before the big moves he made.
